When I nodded, Yurick tore off a chicken leg. I watched the plump leg, expecting it to be placed directly before me.

Contrary to my expectation, the chicken leg went onto Yurick’s own plate. With practiced knife work, he sliced the meat into bite-sized pieces and placed them on my plate. Was this like a mother carefully deboning meat for her children?

“Sorry. Did I cut it too small?”

“Oh, no, not at all. It’s delicious. Thank you, Yurick.”

As I put all the meat from my plate into my mouth, Yurick gave a small smile. Seeming quite proud of himself, he kept placing more sliced meat onto my plate and stared at me intently.

“Hey, me too, me too! I’ll give some to my sister!”
