A woman’s faint voice echoed in my ears. It sounded familiar. If I listened a bit more, I thought I could identify its owner.

The sound of crunching fallen leaves swallowed the woman’s voice. The surrounding noise and vibrations clashed together. Soon, darkness blanketed everything, and all movement ceased.

When I came to my senses, I was already sitting up in bed.

Outside, birdsong pierced sharply through the air. The maids had already risen and were hanging laundry, while the butlers inspected the stables and carriages.

From the kitchen drifted a faint, savory aroma—perhaps bread was being baked.

Swell was the first to notice me and speak. When I refused to join their game, Swell didn’t reply and simply chose a hiding spot.

I headed straight to the dining room and saw Bernard and Felicia already seated and eating. They seemed to have finished preparing for school.
