The two walked side by side through the exhibition hall.

Inside the exhibition hall, there were many marvelous things.

Foreign artworks, which one could usually only see by traveling far across the sea, were on display—such as textiles adorned with patterns never before seen here, musical instruments and vessels entirely unfamiliar.

Whenever Edward spotted something that caught his eye, he glanced at his wife.

He intended to buy her anything she showed interest in. Not only that—he was even prepared to send her on a trip straight to the country of origin if she so wished.

Since last time, when she had traveled alone, her reaction hadn’t been particularly positive, he thought of suggesting she go again, perhaps accompanied by Mrs. Bryce, with whom she seemed quite friendly this time.

Yet his wife kept walking without saying a word. Unable to bear the silence any longer, Edward spoke first.

“They call it a World’s Fair—it really does seem as though participants came from countless places.”

“Yes, it does.”

“There are so many fascinating things. Don’t you think?”

“Indeed. Today, for the first time, I truly realize just how vast the world is.”

Their conversation, which had begun awkwardly, now flowed easily, as if that initial stiffness had been a lie. Encouraged slightly by this, Edward offered a lighthearted joke of his own.

“I feel the same. There’s so much here I’ve never heard of or seen before—it finally makes sense why nobles constantly brag about those mysterious items they claim to have brought from the Orient.”

He said it, hoping to see even the reluctant smile she usually gave him.

But after that single remark, Louisa fell silent once more. Again, silence settled between them.
