Lorraine let out a long sigh as she returned to her room.
Recalling how excited she had been in front of Cedric just moments ago, she frowned, her delicate brow furrowing.

“At this rate, the floor’s going to give way.”
Taking a deep breath, Lorraine slowly scanned the room, as if to clear her mind.
Bright sunshine peacefully streamed into the tidy space filled with luxurious furnishings.
She wished she could freely enjoy this tranquil place—yet—
“What should I do first once I leave here?”
A wife unloved by her husband.
Determined as ever to flee from the painfully predictable sorrow awaiting her, she resolved to plan her future.
“I suppose I should go out for a bit first….”
It would be important to see firsthand how this world operated.
As Lorraine’s eyes idly swept the room again, her eyelids twitched faintly.
Beside the large wardrobe packed with dozens of dresses stood a door.
“What’s that over there?”
She walked over and swiftly opened it.
Beyond the wide-open door lay an ordinary study with a desk and bookshelves.
The only unusual thing was the sheer number of books.
‘Did Lorraine enjoy reading?’
She slowly approached the bookshelf.
Most of the books appeared to be novels likely favored by nobles of this world.

Occasionally, she spotted books listing rules or protocols for specific places.
Lorraine read the titles indifferently until her gaze halted at one section.
One shelf held books noticeably worn from frequent handling.
Most bore no titles.
She reached out and pulled out the thickest one.
Opening it revealed densely packed text accompanied by illustrations.
“Flowers?”
Flipping through page by page, she found entries on dozens of flowers, trees, and grasses.
Beside each entry ran dense handwriting:
Touching it causes a numbing sting in the fingertips, and placing it on the tongue results in temporary loss of taste.
Crush finely and apply to bleeding wounds—it stops bleeding quickly.
Though effective in healing wounds, prolonged skin contact causes flesh to rot.
Her eyes slowly narrowed as she concentrated on the words.
She pulled out another book.
This time, instead of flowers and trees, it resembled an anatomy text, filled with drawings of the human body.
Before high fever sets in, small bead-sized lumps appear in the neck and armpits.
Those who sweat heavily show peeling skin on their fingertips.
Elderly individuals who stand for long periods develop bluish, bulging veins on their legs.
What on earth was this?
Reading the notes—written as though a physician had meticulously recorded patient observations—she grew puzzled.
Another book. Yet another.
Each volume she pulled out and examined dealt exclusively with medicinal herbs and symptoms of illnesses.
“Did Lorraine write these?”
She tilted her head, perplexed.
“Why would Lorraine…?”
…Had something happened?
She strained her round eyes, trying to recall details from the original story.
Then she stared intently at the book in her hands.
“It must belong to someone else.”
Ultimately, she concluded: though this room was indeed Lorraine’s, the handwriting in these books wasn’t hers.
As she slowly nodded to herself and gently closed the book, suddenly—
“Ah! That stings!”
A sharp sensation grazed her fingertip.
“Oh—what? I’ve cut myself.”
Painful and fairly deep, blood began seeping out.
Frowning slightly, she wrapped the wound with her handkerchief.
Thud.
Something fluttered down from between the shelves onto the floor.
A picture-sized illustration lay by her feet.
She bent down and picked up the fallen image.
It depicted a little girl with beautiful red hair.
Lorraine’s eyes, fixed on the girl’s bright smile in the picture, then shifted to the words written atop it.
My beloved Lily.
Lily—apparently the girl’s name.
“Who is she?”
She murmured softly, studying the girl’s face intently—
Knock, knock.
A knock sounded at the door.
She quickly placed the book and picture on the desk and hurried over.
“Milady.”
Jane, glancing around the room, bowed respectfully, her eyes wide as she looked up.
“What is it? Something wrong?”
Lorraine met Jane’s gaze squarely, sensing she had something to say.
“…Duke Hether Calyps has arrived.”
Jane’s hesitant tone clearly indicated this was an unexpected visit.
Hether Calyps.
The noble currently most favored by the king in this world.
And Lorraine’s father—her own father.
“Father has come?”
“Yes. He’s waiting in the reception room.”
“I see. Understood.”
Lorraine gave a light reply and sat before her dressing table.
As Jane approached to tidy her hair, Lorraine stared deeply into the mirror.
Lorraine—herself—was both Cedric’s wife and the daughter of a respected noble.
She’d already declared her intent to divorce Cedric, though she knew it wasn’t immediately feasible.
After all, she was bound by the king’s decree, like heavy shackles.
In the original story, after being ordered to marry Lorraine, Cedric resolved to divorce her as soon as noble attention shifted away.
However, as he observed Lorraine, he changed course—exposing her misdeeds and ultimately expelling her from the mansion.
Since all blame lay with Lorraine, Cedric stood to lose nothing.
Not divorce—banishment.
Enduring such harsh humiliation wasn’t enough; bearing that disgrace was something she’d rather die than accept.
Thus, she’d declared divorce first, judging it better to act preemptively before being cast out.
And honestly speaking—
‘Even if divorced, Lorraine remains the daughter of Duke Calyps.’
Knowing how solid her background was, she hadn’t hesitated.
‘Surely he wouldn’t cast out his daughter just because she got divorced?’

Casually scanning Hether’s thin frame—which reminded her of a toothpick—she deepened the smile on her lips.
“I was surprised you came without notice.”
She spoke as warmly as possible.
“Must I always send word when coming to see my beloved daughter?”
He replied in an even warmer tone.
In that instant, Lorraine’s eyes sparkled.
She concluded definitively: just as in the original, he truly adored his daughter.
At that moment, a servant entered the reception room and placed tea and pie on the table.
“I’ve prepared peach tea and walnut pie.”
“Thank you.”
Hether smiled gently as he watched the servant bow respectfully and leave.
Once both the servant and Jane, who’d been standing by the door, departed and the thick reception room door closed completely—
“Please sit.”
Lorraine offered another sweet invitation—but the corners of her lips stiffened slightly.
‘What’s this…?’
Though Hether’s face still smiled tenderly, she sensed a strange chill hovering over it.

‘Is he about to share something important?’
She wished he’d say something comforting, like:
“Is anyone troubling you?”
“Just trust Father—you needn’t worry about a thing.”
As this hope crossed her mind—
“Father, please sit down…”
Just as she gently parted her lips to speak,
Hether abruptly stepped forward.
Though startled by his sudden closeness, she held his gaze squarely, still meeting his gentle smile.
‘What does he want to say?’
As she softened her eyes questioningly, Hether slowly tilted his head toward her.
With the man standing against the window casting a shadow over half his face, a low voice reached her ears:
“Lorraine, didn’t I tell you to behave quietly if you didn’t want to die?”
…Huh? This wasn’t how it was supposed to be.
