The Extra's Role is Too My Taste (Completed Main Story) - Chapter 9
Thirty-four nights had passed—“the sun rises and sets, the moon rises and sets.”
Grand Duke Icewall and his soldiers triumphantly returned to camp after safely conquering the Ferdan Fortress.
The remaining soldiers who had guarded the camp joyfully welcomed them with cheers and dancing, while Brody and the other female captives proudly received them before the abundant harvest.
Though they returned victorious, the soldiers were in dreadful condition.
Soaked in sweat and blood, it was hardly reasonable to expect them to bathe immediately.
Even Grand Duke Icewall himself wore a tattered cloak over a gaunt, exhausted face as if it were a badge of honor.
Among them, Chief of Staff River was in the best shape—but that merely meant he was slightly less filthy than the rest.
Yet, every face overflowed with pride and delight.
Mrs. Murphy, the stern woman in charge of camp provisions, longed most of all to bathe them right away, but food and drink were far more urgent for the soldiers.
They collapsed wherever they could in the camp, loudly clamoring about their hunger.
Having received advance word of their imminent victorious return, the camp residents met them with knowing smiles and hurriedly brought out food.
Meat was scarce, but hearty potato soup formed the main course, accompanied by a side dish of pickled kohlrabi.
Though puzzled by these unfamiliar crops at first, the soldiers took a bite and immediately erupted into joyful cheers, devouring the entire pot.
“The food goes down so smoothly with alcohol!”
The alcohol came from their spoils of war.
Though the meal wasn’t particularly refined, to men who had suffered chronic hunger—starvation being practically routine—it felt like a lavish feast fit for royalty.
Brody had already given Mrs. Murphy permission to feed them freely from the harvest.
Though the yield wasn’t enormous, their short-term success proved it was a solvable issue—future cultivation would fix it.
Moreover, if their campaign continued to succeed, they could also airlift provisions from regions unaffected by famine.
After praising and encouraging his victorious troops, Grand Duke Aidan circled the encampment a few times before heading into his tent.
Mrs. Murphy, observing this, promptly handed Brody a basin filled with warm water and a towel, nudging her to go inside.
“She must want me to attend to him… Hmm.”
Brody was secretly pleased that the Grand Duke had returned, yet she couldn’t help feeling flustered.
“You’ve worked hard.”
Brody, groaning slightly as she entered the tent, spoke without looking at him while setting down the basin.
“Bree!”
“Whoa! Be careful!”
Aidan suddenly lunged forward, nearly causing Brody to spill the basin.
Despite her scolding, Aidan pulled her into a tight embrace.
“Why is someone like you acting this way…?”
Flustered, Brody pushed him away.
His face was flushed red, clearly tipsy from drink.
The stench—no, not just alcohol, but an overwhelming mix of sweat and blood—was so intense that Brody instinctively covered her nose.
Seeing this, Aidan stepped back, but rather than looking embarrassed, he burst into amused laughter.
“Ugh… Now I understand why Mrs. Murphy sent me in here so urgently.”
Brody initially tried to seat him on the bed but changed her mind out of concern for its cleanliness.
Instead, she fetched a low stool and placed Aidan upon it.
With half-lidded eyes and a gentle smile, he simply let Brody do as she pleased.
“I’ll take off your armor.”
Ugh—how does this even come off? Brody struggled, barely locating the fastenings to remove it.
Neither Do Yeon nor her past self as Brody had ever handled armor before.
Once removed, she flung the disgustingly heavy armor into a distant corner.
“Ah… puh.”
Because of the stench, Brody kept turning her head away, exhaling sharply, then inhaling and holding her breath again in a repeated cycle.
Beneath the armor was a filthy shirt.
‘Can this even be salvaged by washing?’ she wondered, then stripped it off and tossed it to the same distant corner.
Now bare-chested, Aidan blinked patiently, waiting.
Brody muttered something under her breath—Korean profanity that Aidan couldn’t understand—then wrung out a towel soaked in warm water and approached.
“I’ll start with your head!”
After shouting this battle-ready declaration, Brody plopped the towel onto the Duke’s head—and immediately froze in shock.
Trending
His body was covered in wounds.
Old scars mingled with fresh injuries alike.
“To survive and return from battle truly is extraordinary.”
Though the stench remained strong, Brody’s earlier annoyance softened somewhat.
She carefully wiped his hair, face, and neck.
The towel quickly turned grimy.
“…Feels good.”
He murmured in a low voice, eyes closed, a faint satisfied smile playing on his lips.
“You deserve to feel good.”
Brody diligently soaked and wrung out fresh towels repeatedly. Only then did the smell begin to fade.
“How sad it is to lack water…”
If only they could soak in a warm tub—fatigue, grime, and odor would all wash away.
Having cleaned his head, face, and neck, she now turned to his upper body.
‘Hmm…’
Too shy to start from the front, Brody moved behind him.
His back was so broad that she had to scrub it thoroughly—almost as if mopping a floor with both hands.
“Truly, this is the body of a man hardened by life-or-death combat…”
His muscles, the kind usually seen only in physical education textbooks, cast delicate and profound shadows. The towel occasionally snagged on the deep ridges between them.
“I can’t do this…”
Brody’s face burned hot. She was grateful he couldn’t see her from behind.
‘I was just held by a body like that…’
What are you even thinking, Brody? This man just returned from the battlefield. Get a grip.
Scolding herself inwardly, Brody soaked a new towel and handed it to the Duke.
“Hm?”
Aidan blinked awake, looking puzzled.
“Please finish washing the rest yourself. I’ll go fetch more hot water.”
“Ah…”
Before Aidan could utter another word, Brody darted out swiftly.
The cooling towel helped Aidan regain some clarity.
And as reality set in, his face flushed with embarrassment.
Just moments ago, he’d been washed like a helpless child in Brody’s hands—and worse, he’d enjoyed her touch so much he’d even said it aloud.
Jumping up abruptly, Aidan scrubbed his upper body vigorously with the towel.
Then he removed his boots and trousers, giving his lower half an equally thorough scrub.
To his surprise, his legs and feet were filthier than he’d realized.
“No wonder she was horrified…”
Though this was perfectly normal on the battlefield, he felt oddly ashamed that Brody had witnessed him in such a state.
By the time Brody returned, Aidan had already changed into fresh trousers.
Brody noticed that the Grand Duke’s eyes and expression had returned to normal.
“He snapped out of it so quickly?”
Aidan easily took the basin from Brody as she groaned under its weight.
Brody eyed him suspiciously from head to toe.
“You’re already all cleaned up?”
“…Yes.”
“Hmph. You couldn’t possibly have washed all that in so little time, could you?”
“It’s… it’s fine. I’ll handle the rest later.”
Pretending not to hear him, Brody soaked the towel in the fresh water she’d brought, wrung it out firmly, and placed it in his hands.
“Please wash your upper body some more.”
She then gently guided the awkwardly standing Aidan back onto the stool.
“I won’t ask you to take off your pants.”
Brody briskly rolled up his trouser legs as she spoke.

“Give me your feet.”
“What… why…?”
Ignoring Aidan’s flustered protest, Brody placed the basin at his feet, submerged the towel in it, then plunged his feet fully into the water. Wrapping the towel around them, she began to scrub.
Aidan frowned as he watched the water and towel grow filthy.
“I can…”
“You should hurry and wash your upper body, Your Highness. Or would you like me to wash that too?”
Brody spoke without looking up, and Aidan fell silent, obediently resuming his scrubbing.
Yet he found it hard to focus, distracted by Brody’s hands on his feet—even though the task required no real concentration.
Under Brody’s careful hands, Aidan’s feet grew clean. The firm, refreshing rub through the towel felt surprisingly pleasant.
“Bree.”
“…”
Ah—Bree. My false name. After a brief pause, Brody finally responded to his call, and Aidan spoke quietly.
“I brought spoils back. They say there are plenty of pretty clothes. Since I haven’t got an eye for such things, go pick out whatever you like.”
As he spoke, Aidan watched Brody’s face carefully.
But since she was focused downward on his feet, her expression remained unclear—though he sensed no particular joy.
‘Spoils… Such a foreign word to me. If the Duke won, then someone else must have lost.’
Though taking spoils seemed natural in a victor’s world, it felt unfamiliar to Brody.
Perhaps such thoughts were a luxury in this world.
Still, touched by Aidan’s thoughtful gesture, Brody offered a gentle smile as she stood, basin in hand.
“I’ll go dump the water.”
Seeing Brody’s indifference toward the “pretty clothes,” Aidan stared blankly after her retreating figure, bewildered.
“Don’t women usually love clothing gifts? What went wrong? Maybe I was just too filthy…”
He longed to see her radiant smile again—the one she’d worn out in the fields before he’d left.
Moments later, Brody returned.
Aidan sat dumbly, unsure what to do, just watching her.
After a quiet pause, Brody couldn’t bear the silence any longer and spoke first.
“Are your wounds alright?”
“Yeah, I wasn’t badly injured.”
“Shall I apply some ointment? Bruises are one thing, but cuts should really be treated properly.”
“You’re skilled with medicines too?”
“I’m fairly decent with anything plant-related.”
“I see. So you have a talent with plants.”
“Yes! Did you see our field?”
Brody said proudly.
Aidan chuckled in reply.
“Yes, it was truly magnificent.”
“Of course! We even met our target yield safely. You won’t need to worry about food anymore.”
“That’s right, that’s right. Your contribution has been immense. I’m honestly even happier about this than our victory in battle.”
Flustered by his praise, Brody’s cheeks reddened. Finding her reaction endearing, Aidan gazed at her silently, eyes crinkling in amusement.
His face, still flushed from lingering alcohol, and his glistening eyes made Brody’s heart race.
‘Now’s the time. Don’t hesitate. Say it while his mood is good.’
Gathering her resolve, Brody clasped her hands tightly before her chest.
“Your Highness, do you remember the vow you made before leaving? That if I fulfilled my duty, you’d grant me a wish.”
“Of course.”
Aidan nodded. How could he forget? He still remembered her expression from that moment vividly.
“May I tell you that wish now?”
“Yes.”
Aidan felt anticipation rise. Granting her wish would surely bring back that bright smile of hers.
At his permission, Brody swallowed hard before speaking.
“My… my wish is this, Your Highness.”

Why the long pause? This hesitation seemed unlike her. Curious, he waited for her next words.
At last, her lips parted.
“Please grant me my freedom.”

Yes, I expected this. You shouldn’t make such a promise, Aidan, that you’re truly innocent.
