“But it’s strange that the young consort of Viscount Raven isn’t visible. Moreover, his son-in-law is nowhere to be seen either. Could they be so overwhelmed by grief that they cannot even hold themselves upright?”

Ian asked, staring intently at the lady of the house.

“Well…”

She stammered, flustered and at a loss—completely unlike her composed self when guiding us through the mansion or answering Count Perman’s inquiries and my own awkward questions.

“Are they even still alive? They haven’t… taken their own lives against their will, have they?”

What on earth did that mean? How could someone end their own life without it being their own will?

It seemed I wasn’t the only one confused by Ian’s words. Count Perman also looked puzzled. Yet the daughter of Viscount Raven appeared to understand him instantly.

“How could you possibly know that? That story never left this estate—it’s something absolutely no one else knows. How…”

“You shouldn’t underestimate the reach of the Imperial Court. If you truly understood who His Imperial Majesty the Emperor is, you wouldn’t use the word ‘absolutely’ so carelessly.”

She lowered her head deeply at Ian’s words.

“They’re alive.”

“Both of them—or should I say three people? In any case, they’re all still alive?”

“Yes. They haven’t done anything. Truly.”

Ian nodded with a gentle-looking smile at her words. Count Perman and I remained utterly baffled, sitting there unable to follow their conversation.

At least Count Perman hadn’t understood either—that was a small relief. Had he shown any sign of comprehension, I would have felt utterly defeated, as if I were the only fool left out of the secret.
