“I pay my respects to His Royal Highness the Crown Prince. I am Eileen Raven, the eldest daughter of Viscount Raven.”

The lady of the Raven household greeted Crown Prince Ian with proper courtesy.

Though she offered greetings to Count Perman, who followed him, and to me as well, she could not conceal her discomfort. Had Ian not accompanied us, we likely would not have received such hospitality—at best, we might have been fortunate not to be turned away outright.

And rightly so: with the patient already deceased and funeral rites underway, our sudden arrival to investigate the illness would naturally be seen as impolite.

Moreover, nobles tend to perceive even minor actions as threats to their authority, so it was only natural that our visit—mine and Count Perman’s—was met with considerable unease.

Ian had initially thought his presence unnecessary, but without him, gaining access to examine the patient—or even seeing the patient at all—would have been difficult.

In fact, I might even need to ask him to accompany me on future visits—provided, of course, I could be certain this illness wouldn’t spread to him.

The lady led us to the reception room. While following her, we occasionally encountered household staff, all of whom wore tense expressions and held their breaths in rigid silence.

Noticing this, the lady remarked,

“Given that we are in mourning, the servants are unable to concentrate properly. Please forgive any discourtesy they might show, and understand with your generous grace.”

Ian nodded, and both Count Perman and I assured her we would. Truthfully, although the atmosphere was stiff, the servants hardly seemed likely to behave rudely.

Soon, we reached the floor where the reception room was located. The corridor leading to it—referred to as a gallery in noble households—appeared rather unusual.

‘Could it be because Ileina has deep knowledge of painting and exceptional aesthetic sense? Or is this place simply special in its own right?’

My curiosity was understandable. In the McKane household, the corridor truly lived up to its name as a gallery, its walls adorned with paintings. Occasionally interspersed with white marble sculptures, it was decorated simply yet beautifully.

Ileina once told me that the gallery along the path to the reception room also served to demonstrate the family’s artistic refinement to guests.
