In truth, Ileina and Shuri were extremely worried about my growing closeness with Ian. Even though Claire already had a fiancé, spending so much time with Ian, the Crown Prince, was bound to stir up controversy.

I also knew that Ileina and Shuri, having just gone through a major ordeal themselves and now burdened with Claire’s amnesia, were deliberately refraining from pressing me too hard and asking too many questions.

Judging from Ileina’s expression, rumors about me, Ian, and my fiancé were already circulating—not in a favorable light.

Perel, Triane, and Partisan, who had grown close to me after a previous incident, once came to visit and shared a brief tea with me.

Though they claimed they’d come to consult me about taking revenge on their former wet nurse and faithless ex-fiancé—burning with desire for retribution yet unsure how to proceed—they soon cautiously asked me about my relationship with Ian.

Likely, their talk about their former fiancé was just an excuse; what they truly wanted was to verify firsthand the very rumors openly circulating in high society.

I explained to them that I had only recently taken on the role of physician in the imperial capital, and that frequent meetings with Ian were simply due to numerous matters requiring collaboration—not anything that warranted misunderstanding. They seemed mostly convinced, yet still didn’t appear to fully trust my words.

The proper course of action would be to distance myself from Ian now and wait until the rumors died down before proceeding with my marriage to my fiancé, but I chose instead to ignore all of it as if I knew nothing.

Ian felt the same way. Not once had he tried to create distance between us over these rumors.

If anything, both he and I seemed afraid that we might drift apart.

He must have been deeply shaken by the incident at the apothecary, when I nearly died—so much so that he began neglecting his duties just to spend more time with me.

Given that, for a long while, we had only each other to rely on, my death must have been a tremendous shock to him.

For my part, after experiencing death and awakening unexpectedly to find myself no longer as Claire but as Jane, Ian was the only person with whom I could truly interact.

Under such circumstances, I couldn’t simply pull away from him just because of what other nobles might think.

After all, I’d learned at my first imperial banquet just how sensitive they were to rumors—and how their imaginations could inflate even the most trivial matters into something enormous.
