It suddenly struck me as odd that Ronowe and Beris weren’t here. They’d always been with Carlisle, inseparable like needle and thread. Now that only the stragglers of that trio—the ones who’d once formed a matched pair of shoes—were gone, the peace felt almost unnerving.

Sometimes, when boredom or monotony set in, the Fleur Siblings had their uses. Yet whenever they showed up, they caused such a ruckus like unbridled, overexcited colts that their absence was just as welcome—leaving me in a state where I could neither laugh nor cry.

When I pressed further, Freyrie’s upturned lips returned to their normal position. If she’d truly been exhausted to death, she should’ve collapsed in weariness by now—but prodding too insistently might make me seem suspicious, as though I were rummaging through her soul.

If she’d once blindly followed Sasha, who knew what thoughts she harbored beneath that smile—or whether she was scheming something sinister? Best to feign ignorance for now.

‘I should just drag this out a bit longer, then go take a nap.’
