“Come in.”

It was bound to be either Carlisle or the maids. Since only a specific few ever came to see me, I granted entry without hesitation.

Moreover, ever since the spy incident long ago, security had been significantly tightened—knights were stationed everywhere and conducted frequent patrols, so anyone even slightly suspicious would be immediately apprehended. Thus, it was impossible for someone intending to harm me to simply walk in through the front door.

Even to set foot inside the palace, one had to undergo strict inspections. And even if by some miracle they slipped through undetected, openly barging in to capture me and throw me into prison would only result in their immediate arrest.

Relieved that I wouldn’t have to deal with such fools anymore, I watched as the door opened.

Creeeak—

“Excuse me.”

Soon after, Carlisle entered and closed the door behind him. Upon seeing me, he bowed respectfully. Judging by how much time had passed, he must have been helping the maids with various chores, diligently using my advice as a stepping stone to build rapport with everyone in the palace.

“Just now, I helped carry the laundry and split firewood.”

But hauling baskets was one thing—why would he split firewood?

Even though Carlisle hailed from a fallen noble house, he was under the protection of Marquess Fleur and shouldn’t have needed to do such strenuous manual labor. His situation was different from Jeff’s childhood days.

Frankly, tasks like splitting wood were meant for hired artisans or lumberjacks in the imperial palace. He was certainly eccentric, but perhaps this was simply Carlisle’s chosen path to survive here.

What could I do, then?

I merely thought, “He’ll manage on his own,” and let it go. Just because I chose him didn’t mean I had to coddle him like a helpless child. Life was about real-world experience—he should learn through trial and error, grow quickly, and become someone useful.

Whether he proved himself capable of enduring a month under my tutelage and thriving in the imperial palace depended entirely on his own actions. I hoped he wouldn’t disappoint me.
