The wisps of steam rising in curls vanished as if sucked into the afternoon’s blazing sunlight. Her mind was no different.

She had expected to be interrogated—asked how things had come to this, whether she had truly become Harold’s mistress—given how wildly the scandal had spread across the empire.

She had even braced herself for a slap across the cheek, but instead Olivia asked in a calm, even tone, without the slightest hint of emotion. What unsettled her even more was Olivia’s light brown eyes, which seemed to be silently pleading for an honest answer.

Was she hallucinating from sheer tension? Or was she interpreting Olivia’s gaze according to her own desperate wish to escape reality?

Not knowing which it was only deepened her confusion. Lily stared blankly at Olivia, her expression vacant as though half her soul had already fled. A flicker of sympathy briefly crossed Olivia’s face as she met Lily’s trembling green eyes.

“You’ve been through something terribly unfortunate.”

Olivia continued in a voice laced with a sigh, sounding genuinely sorrowful for Lily.

“Losing your father and the rest of your household overnight, left alone with only your mother—whose body and mind aren’t whole—of course that would be difficult. And just when you found someone to rely on and married him, even that man and his family turned out to be anything but normal. That must have made things even harder. I understand.”

Though the words were filled with compassion, they offered Lily no comfort at all. Instead, a chill ran down her spine at the realization that someone who hadn’t even known her face just minutes ago seemed to know every detail of her inner turmoil. She bit down hard on her lower lip.

“Harold probably took pity on your sad, pitiful situation and, before he knew it, gave you his heart. To someone with nowhere else in the world to turn, he must seem like the strongest, most dependable pillar—so naturally, you became his mistress.”

The word “mistress” struck like a dagger, piercing her head and heart, and Lily’s head drooped involuntarily.

“To be honest, I originally intended to tell you that it would be best for both of us to grow apart… but after learning your circumstances, I’ve changed my mind.”

Olivia set down the teaspoon she’d been stirring in her sugared coffee and continued.

“People like you wouldn’t listen even if everyone around you shouted for you to leave. In fact, you’d likely cling on even tighter, like a leech… So, if you truly wish to live your whole life as Harold’s mistress, I’ve decided to let you.”
