“Didn’t you say with your own mouth that you’d make an effort?”

It was phrasing aimed directly at her temperament—someone who treated promises to herself as if they were her own life. Seeing Ra In’s expression harden confirmed it had some effect, at least. Yet, even in that moment, there wasn’t a single word of apology or mention of correction from her.

“Could you tell me, in words, what you’re thinking right now?”

Ra In shifted her eyes toward him. Predictably, her expression screamed, “Why should I have to?”

“In human relationships, I believe respect must come before trust. Right now, I feel I’m not being respected by Prosecutor Jin Ra In.”

He’d revealed his inner thoughts first. Ra In, unaccustomed to showing vulnerability, was now struggling to find words. Had he not shown sincerity, she wouldn’t have weighed her response so carefully—but his words were worth reflecting on.

“I’ll… try to make an effort.”

Ra In’s reply sounded as stiff and mechanical as a voice recording. Song Kang let out a dry chuckle. This style of communication was unimaginable at Taesung—no, he’d never even seen anything like it.

“I’m genuinely confused. Is this the typical way prosecutors communicate?”

Especially toward him—no employee at Taesung had ever addressed him this way.

“Haah…”

Ra In let out a deep sigh, rose from her seat, and lifted her eyes sharply. Song Kang met her gaze directly.

“I understand what you want. But if I were good at that kind of thing, would I be in this mess right now?!”

At least she understood—that was good. Song Kang stared firmly at Ra In. He’d never seen a wild horse with such a delicate appearance. He knew her ingrained habits couldn’t change overnight, but he still hoped for even the smallest shift.

“It was a necessary call, so let’s check your messages right now.”

Ra In sat back down with a prickly attitude and checked the notifications she’d received.

The handover note from Ha In listed first: “Director Na Song Gang places great importance on basic etiquette and prompt replies—especially hates having to ask something twice. Please keep this in mind.”

Even if she’d read the message earlier, she consoled herself, the outcome probably would’ve been the same. She hurriedly scrolled to the next message.

It contained a request for her email address so they could send a summary of the case’s progress, along with instructions regarding shared file access permissions.

Of course, since she hadn’t even realized messages had come in, she hadn’t replied to any—and both Attorney Cha Hae In and Director Na Song Gang must have been burning with frustration by now. A wave of guilt and embarrassment surged through Ra In, prompting her to clear her throat awkwardly.

From the current situation, Song Kang could tell Ra In hadn’t deliberately ignored the messages.

Just as he was about to ask if she’d eaten before working, her phone buzzed with an incoming call labeled “Our Senior Joo Hyuk.”

Ra In looked flustered. She placed her index finger to her lips in a “shh” gesture, silently asking him to stay quiet.

Song Kang inadvertently saw the name on her screen and instantly grasped its meaning. For some reason, however, it left him in a foul mood.

“Yes, Senior.”

Ra In’s pupils trembled as though caught in an earthquake.

“Huh? Oh—I’m not at home right now. Ah, but I’m nearby.”

She gave herself away completely—in voice and expression—like someone who’d never told a lie in their life.

“Oh… then please go ahead and enter the house first. I’ll be there soon. You haven’t eaten yet, right? I’ll come right away. Yes~.”

After ending the call, Ra In stared at the mountain of work piled on her desk. Song Kang watched her silently.

Just how close did they have to be for someone to tell another to go ahead and enter an empty house? The conversation had been deeply irritating.

“I’ll review what you’ve sent. But for now, I think I need to go.”

Ra In hurriedly pulled on her outerwear as she spoke. Song Kang felt a pang of disappointment—her reaction to his messages had been so indifferent, yet now she seemed unusually busy and eager to leave.

“Sounds like something really important came up?”

“Oh, Senior said he’s coming to my place.”

“So he’s coming—does that really require this much urgency?”

Ra In shot him an exasperated look.

“That ‘Senior’ is also a prosecutor—extremely sharp, too. This whole act is me struggling to keep the confidentiality clause, okay?”

He was genuinely curious—where did her naive belief come from, thinking that such a perceptive senior prosecutor wouldn’t see through her lie?

“Even so, don’t widen your eyes at me like that.”

Song Kang placed his hands on his waist and directly called out her attitude.

“Na Song Gang, I…”

“Right now, who exactly is ‘Mr./Ms. So-and-so’ standing where?”

He cut off Ra In mid-sentence and continued his reprimand. She stood frozen, looking bewildered.

“This is society, and I’m treating Prosecutor Jin Ra In with the respect appropriate to this setting. Am I still your defendant?”

Everything he said made perfect sense, leaving Ra In utterly speechless.

“I know you’ve only ever worked within that organization, and I understand prosecutors are treated with exceptional deference wherever they go, regardless of hierarchy. But that doesn’t mean it’s something others must accept. Let me state this clearly to avoid any misunderstanding—whether you’re currently active as a prosecutor or not isn’t what matters. If you don’t know the rules outside your bubble, I’ll teach them to you, one by one.”

Song Kang scolded her relentlessly, and Ra In stood rooted in place, absorbing every word.

“Even if you ignore Taesung’s internal hierarchy, I’m still older than you, Prosecutor Jin Ra In. If you couldn’t find an appropriate honorific, attaching my title would’ve been the right thing to do. If you intend to accompany me, that’s something you’ll need to learn. I can’t stand seeing people act recklessly without reason.”

Ra In lifted her head as if she had something to say. Their eyes met—he showed no sign of backing down.

Besides, she couldn’t think of any solid counterargument. Upon reflection, everything he’d said was correct.

“If you have something to say, go ahead.”

Song Kang gave her the floor—but she had no retort ready.

“If you don’t, then just say so.”

He guided her through every point like he was teaching manners to a child. Despite appearing fully grown, she somehow still felt childlike—but it wasn’t because of her petite frame.

“No… I have nothing.”

Ra In finally managed to force the words out, then lowered her head deeply to avoid his gaze.

Song Kang began to wonder if he’d been too harsh—and felt uneasy.

“Let’s stop here for today. You seem really pressed for time—I’ll drive you.”

Song Kang started walking, but Ra In remained frozen in place.

“Aren’t you coming?”

“No, it’s fine.”

Her pride thoroughly wounded, Ra In wasn’t about to obediently follow him.

“Do you really think I’m adjusting my schedule to yours right now? Because you didn’t answer a single call today, I still have things left to discuss. Will you hear them all here first, or listen on the way?”

Ra In didn’t want to appear petty over his earlier remark. Reluctantly, they left together.

Silence filled the elevator as they rode down. Song Kang pressed the button for the underground parking level. As soon as the doors opened, Ra In strode ahead.

Did she even know where she was going?… Song Kang pressed his key fob, making the car beep, and Ra In turned toward the sound.

“This way.”

Song Kang got in first and started the engine. Ra In reluctantly climbed in after him.

“What’s your home address?”

Song Kang handed her his phone with the map app open. Without a word, Ra In typed in her address and handed it back.

“Prosecutor Jin Ra In, you seem very accustomed to having someone right beside you taking care of things. I suppose the staff at the prosecutor’s office are extremely devoted to their prosecutors.”

More precisely, she seemed like someone who needed quite a bit of care outside of work itself.

Ra In felt the absence of Joo Hyuk anew at his pointed remark. He’d always followed her like a shadow—even reminding her to eat…

“It’s not like that. I just had a senior who took good care of me.”

Song Kang didn’t need to ask to know exactly who she meant. And once again, for some inexplicable reason, his mood soured. So he changed the subject.

“When can we expect the first report?”

“Attorney Cha Hae In mentioned in her message that it’s a Day-One report.”

“If it’s a Day-One report, it should’ve been submitted today already.”

Now that he mentioned it—she realized he was right. Ra In pressed her lips together tightly again. Why was he being so nitpicky today? She felt like she couldn’t breathe.

She hadn’t even considered that he’d been holding back his claws until now.

“There’s a lot to read right now, so I’m being considerate by giving you time to write it.”

“Well… I guess I’ll just write the report, then.”

“Oh, really?”

That simple “Oh, really?” carried layers of meaning. Especially since he was already planning to scrutinize the report’s confirmation more thoroughly than ever before.

“But do you eat before you work?”

“I… haven’t eaten yet. But I’ll eat soon, so it’s fine.”

To be so absorbed in work that she didn’t even notice whether she’d eaten or not—Song Kang considered himself a workaholic, but he’d just met someone even more extreme.

“I’ve stocked the break room fridge with salads, bread, and simple meal kits. If you need anything else, let me know.”

Ra In didn’t respond—she just stared out the window. Song Kang stopped at a red light and snapped his fingers sharply. Startled by the sound, Ra In turned toward him.

“Aren’t you going to answer?”

“Yes.”

She gave another brief reply and turned back toward the window. Her gaze fell upon the brightly lit Central District Prosecutors’ Office.

The apartment she’d received upon becoming a prosecutor was very close to the office—unless she took the subway, the building was always in view. And now, as if on cue, they’d hit another red light.

Song Kang called out to Ra In, who couldn’t tear her eyes away from the building.

“My phone battery’s almost dead. You’ll have to give me directions yourself.”

He used this white lie to divert her attention.

“Turn right at the big intersection up ahead and go straight down.”

“Don’t just tell me to drop you off anywhere—guide me all the way to your front door.”

Ra In followed his instruction and directed him right to her doorstep.

After passing the prosecutors’ office, Ra In’s mood had visibly plummeted—and Song Kang felt uneasy too. They’d arrived at their destination, and just as she was about to get out, Song Kang called her back.

“You worked hard today.”

Predictably, Ra In gave no real reply—just her eyes darting restlessly.

“I get it, so just go insi—”

“Thank you… for the ride.”

Just as Song Kang was about to give up expecting any gratitude, Ra In quietly offered a small word of thanks before stepping out of the car.

Jin Ra In wasn’t heartless—just unrefined. Song Kang watched until she disappeared into the building, then finally left himself.

Male lead is a Love-Obsessed Merman

When he discovers she has gone, he risks everything to pursue her on land, enduring agonizing pain to transform his tail into human legs…

One-line summary: Male lead chases female lead. The male lead’s love is a bit sick, an invincible love brain.

Synopsis

During a voyage at sea, Jiang Yang accidentally captures a merman.

Servant: I heard that mermen are fierce and brutal.

Jiang Yang looks at the merman obediently rubbing her palm like a puppy: “You call this fierce and brutal?”

Servant: I heard that mermen have no human nature.

Jiang Yang looks at the merman with wet puppy eyes, obsessively calling her ‘A Yang’ like a childish infant: “You call this having no human nature?”

With great difficulty, she releases the merman back into the sea and returns to shore.

Who would have thought that in less than half a month, the merman, who should have been freely wandering in the South China Sea, would shed his scales, endure the pain of losing his tail, transform into human legs, and come ashore to find her?

He kneels at her feet, rubbing her palm, with merman tears rolling down: “A Yang, don’t abandon me.”
