Mother-in-Law Refuses to Regress! (7 Chapters Left to Complete) - Chapter 16
“I don’t know who you think you are, suddenly showing up and babbling nonsense.”
Siod spoke sternly.
“I came here with some idea of what’s going on.”
Guinevere hesitated. If she were to die, this man was the only one who could protect William—because, as far as she knew, no one was stronger than him.
Yet she couldn’t tell whether she could trust him.
“Bera. Why didn’t you tell me?”
There were countless pressing issues to deal with, yet Siod found himself blurting out that question as soon as he faced Guinevere.
“You had plenty of chances to tell me. So why didn’t you?”
Guinevere pressed her lips shut. Her icy composure made Siod scoff without even realizing it.
“Oh, wait—were you worried I might be the father?”
Guinevere was utterly dumbfounded. She sneered and snapped,
“Stop talking nonsense and just say what you came here for. You didn’t break into my estate like that just to ask something so ridiculous—did you? If you did, you’d better be prepared.”
“I’m jealous. Besides me, who else could it be…?”
Guinevere kicked Siod again. This time too, he didn’t dodge. With a mocking tone, she said,
“Do you enjoy getting hit? You won’t even dodge? Weren’t you the one who just vanished without looking back the moment you heard about the child?”
He was insane. Regret flooded Siod so intensely his vision blurred, and he bit his lip hard. He’d thought it was just a fleeting emotion—yet now that he saw her face to face, he knew it wasn’t.
“I didn’t know it was my child.”
“If you’re just going to keep saying that….”
“I’m a dragon.”
Damn it. Guinevere silently cursed. Today had brought too many shocks—she felt her heart might give out. Rarely flustered, she even stammered.
“What… what? A dragon?”
“Yes, a dragon. I never imagined a child could be born between a dragon and a human.”
“That’s absurd….”
“Yes, absurd. I thought so too. But it happened. I even believed it was someone else’s child….”
He’d fled before he went mad and killed everyone. Siod swallowed those words. The nature he refused to acknowledge kept forcing its way out.
‘Ah, I’ve lost it completely. Fleeting emotion? Is this really just a fleeting emotion?’
He cursed himself. He’d thought it was shallow water, but in truth, he’d been buried deep in tidal mud—and now the tide was rushing in. The realization made him chuckle softly.
“Are you insane?”
“Bera. The reason you’re so furious right now… it’s because the child really is mine, isn’t it?”
“……”
“There’s no other possibility—you’re certain it’s mine, aren’t you?”
Guinevere couldn’t answer. But an inexplicable surge of emotion made her clench her fists, and she began pummeling Siod like a punching bag.
Siod just laughed as he took the blows.
“It’s true, isn’t it? Isn’t it?”
“You lunatic. Shut your mouth.”
“So I’m right.”
After beating him for a long while, Guinevere finally stopped, panting.
“So what do you actually want to say?”
The smile vanished from Siod’s face.
While he struggled to decide where to begin, Guinevere quietly gripped a dagger she’d secretly prepared, holding it reversed in her hand.
She’d always feared a dragon might appear someday. So she’d forged a weapon capable of killing even a dragon.
This dagger was it. In theory, merely embedding it into a body would drain magical power—enough to fatally wound a dragon.
Siod had once been her lover, but William mattered more to Guinevere. If Siod threatened William’s existence, she intended to kill him the moment he let his guard down.
But then…
“Our child might be in danger.”
‘Our child?’
Startled by the unexpected words, Guinevere’s grip loosened.
“This might sound shocking, but hear me out to the end. Someone has turned back time—three times now. I set out to investigate it and discovered the culprit… is our child.”
Guinevere stood frozen, unsure how to react. The dagger slipped from her hand, yet she didn’t even think to pick it up.
“Normally, dragons would just observe for a while. But this time, there are already victims among our kind. Eggs that should have hatched are failing to break open. Dragons are bound above all else to protect their eggs and hatchlings. That’s why… I came out to investigate.”

Misinterpreting Guinevere’s stunned silence as mere confusion, Siod continued.
“If those eggs never hatch, their mother will go mad and wreak havoc. So we must stop this repeating time loop. But here’s the thing—the child doesn’t even know Draconic. How could they have cast that magic?”
“Draconic?”
“Yesterday, you said William still couldn’t use magic, right? Of course he couldn’t—he wouldn’t have been able to channel a dragon’s magic through human speech. So how did he…?”
Guinevere’s legs gave out, and she sank to the floor.
“Guinevere?”
Tears streamed endlessly down her blank, soulless face. Startled, Siod hurried over. Guinevere muttered dazedly,
“I didn’t even know….”
“Know what?”
“I kept pushing him, not knowing any of this.”
Siod couldn’t understand. Just as he knelt before her, reaching out to steady her, Guinevere’s next whisper froze him.
“That’s why he killed himself. Because of me….”
Was it exhaustion? Guinevere collapsed right then and there. Only Siod remained, staring blankly as he replayed her words in his mind.
‘He killed himself?’
*
He couldn’t return to his lair in the Dragon’s Valley. Siod carried the unconscious Guinevere to the hotel where he was staying and wove layer upon layer of protective barriers around her.
Gazing at the dagger resting on the table, he thought,
‘So she went and made something like this. I can understand why Lord’s so wary.’
Lord had tried to eradicate mithril—the metal lethal to dragons—from the human realm. Dragon lairs were piled high with mithril arms and armor; they’d scavenged every scrap they could find.
Yet Guinevere possessed a mithril dagger, enchanted with potent magic—likely inscribed by her own hand. If that blade had pierced him, even he would’ve been in serious danger.
Siod sighed. Just then, Guinevere stirred and woke. Startled, she sat up abruptly and instinctively summoned her magic.
Siod looked at her expressionlessly and said,
“Calm down. I won’t hurt you.”
Guinevere spotted the dagger on the table. Now that he’d seen it, there was no chance of catching him off guard. She dispersed her magic and swept her hair back.
Even in this state, she looked beautiful—enough to make him question his sanity. Siod felt like a madman. But he had to ask.
“What did you mean by ‘he killed himself’?”
“……”
“I know you’re exhausted, but I’m dying to understand.”
Siod had assumed Guinevere had lost her memories each time time reset—after all, she was human. But perhaps, being a Transcendent, she remembered the missing fifty years.
A tangle of thoughts swirled in his head. Could Guinevere herself have been the culprit? Did she rewind time after her son’s suicide? But the magic used then wasn’t hers—he knew that well, having been intimate with her.
“It means exactly what I said.”
“So the child… why?”
Guinevere blinked rapidly, fighting back tears. She felt she had no right to cry. Yet her voice trembled with sorrow anyway.
“William couldn’t use magic. So… he offered his own heart as the catalyst to reverse time.”
Guinevere buried her face in her hands, her raven-black hair cascading like a waterfall. Her shoulders began to shake. She shouldn’t cry—but the tears wouldn’t stop….
Siod moved closer and wrapped his arms around the despairing Guinevere. The story shattered him. He didn’t know how to comfort her, so he offered an awkward apology.
“Bera. I’m sorry.”
He wished she wouldn’t cry. He’d never seen her shed a tear before—but since their reunion, all he’d seen was sorrow etched on her face. He never wanted to see her like this again; if nothing else, he’d hoped to make her smile.
“It’s because I left. I’m sorry. Please don’t cry.”
Guinevere broke down sobbing at Siod’s clumsy comfort.
“If I’d been there, none of this would’ve happened. It’s all my fault.”
Siod pulled her tightly against him and whispered,
“Blame me. You’ve done nothing wrong.”
Oddly, those words brought her comfort. Guinevere wailed and hit him.
“You bastard. You’re a real bastard.”
“Yes. You’re right. It’s all my fault.”
If Siod hadn’t left, they might have realized William carried dragon blood. Then she wouldn’t have pressured him so harshly about his lack of magic.
William might never have grown into such a melancholy young man—and never would have taken his own life. Guinevere told herself that, yet deep down, she knew the truth.
“I forced magic on him. Kept demanding why he couldn’t wield the power he was born with… why he wasn’t trying hard enough….”
“No. That’s not why. Bera. Please, don’t cry.”

He didn’t understand why his chest ached so much. Siod pulled Guinevere closer, feeling her tremble in his arms. She’d never seemed this fragile before.
He stroked her back, torn between comforting her and gritting his teeth against the unwanted heat stirring in his body despite everything.
Suddenly, Guinevere lifted her head and glared at him, grabbing him by the collar.
“Will you leave again?”
“No.”
“Then… then… are you on my side?”
“Yes.”
She wanted to hold onto him. Right now, she needed every ally she could get. So Guinevere kissed him.
