Mother-in-Law Refuses to Regress! (7 Chapters Left to Complete) - Chapter 17
Guinevere opened her eyes in the dark room late at night and swallowed a curse inwardly.
“Was I… sexually frustrated?”
“You’re awake?”
The moment she opened her eyes, he spoke—as if he’d been watching over her all along. Guinevere, irritated without even realizing it, abruptly sat up. As she hastily gathered and put on her clothes, she felt utterly absurd.
“Where are you going?”
Without a word, Guinevere fastened her robe and grabbed the dagger lying on the table. Throughout the time she slid it into her waistband, Siod remained silent.
Sitting at the table, Guinevere glared in Siod’s direction and said,
“Speak.”
“About what?”
“Tell me everything you know.”
They should have talked first. Yet, it had been so late into the night…
‘…Was I possessed by something?’
Perhaps it was that face causing the trouble. Guinevere gritted her teeth, glaring at his shamelessly handsome features. Even in the darkness, the faint moonlight gracefully outlined Siod’s silhouette.
Guinevere tightly shut her eyes.
“Don’t worry. Nothing will happen right away.”
“…….”
“It’s a task entrusted to me by Lord, so no one else will interfere. Dragons are, by nature, quite lazy. The real problem begins after the egg hatches… but I can handle it myself.”
“Explain clearly so I can understand.”
“A dragon’s egg must be nurtured for a hundred years, continuously fed magic by its mother to awaken. It can’t be left even for a moment—that’s no ordinary task. Especially for dragons, who sleep more days than they’re awake, it’s an arduous burden.”
Guinevere listened quietly. This was important information.
“But… the egg that should have hatched by now hasn’t. The issue is that this egg is a rare one, born once every three thousand years, and Lord’s daughter is the one incubating it… and she’s furious that it hasn’t hatched.”
“When will that egg hatch?”
“Without the time regression, it would have hatched fifty years from now—but who knows? Truthfully, no one can say for sure now. Even the dragons have never encountered something like this. Since no one in the Valley of Dragons was affected by the time regression, no one even considered that the egg might be impacted.”
Guinevere tapped the table with her fingertips and said,
“Then that dragon might come seeking revenge fifty years from now? Or even tomorrow, if the egg hatches immediately?”
“Don’t worry. I can win.”
“What’s the chance your Lord will get involved?”
“I already told you—Lord entrusted this to me, so he won’t interfere. But if someone else turns back time again, he’ll step in.”
Guinevere let out a deep sigh of relief.
‘So all I need to do is prevent another time regression.’
Ever since learning the dragons were moving, she hadn’t slept properly. Though she couldn’t fully trust Siod’s words, she unconsciously began to relax.
But Guinevere froze rigidly at Siod’s next words.
“And… Lord already knows that a child has been conceived between you and me.”
“What?”
Guinevere gasped and repeated in disbelief. Siod glanced at her cautiously before answering hesitantly.
“Because I asked him whether a child could be born between a dragon and a human…”
“Wait—so your Lord also knows that William is the culprit behind the time regression magic?”
“No? Lord believes you’re the culprit—that’s why I stepped forward.”
Yet it might only be a matter of time before the truth came out. Guinevere quickly spoke.
“Say I’m the culprit.”
“…….”
“Say that my child died, so I personally reversed time.”
“Bera…”
Siod sighed her name. Guinevere had changed so much. The woman who once seemed endlessly selfish had become a mother, and he himself was…
“Answer me.”
“…I’ll do as you say.”
He didn’t dislike this change. In fact, he found it even harder to look away. The fact that it was their child who had transformed her stirred something deep within him.
Perhaps because he felt too elated? Siod, without realizing it, wanted to test an uncertain possibility.
“There’s one way to ensure our child’s safety.”
“What is it?”
Trending
“Gaining recognition as part of the dragon race.”
If that were possible, they wouldn’t merely avoid threats—they’d receive protection from every dragon. Siod continued quietly,
“I searched through the records and found an account of a half-human child awakening their draconic blood.”
Among Lord’s words, one cryptic statement stood out:
‘Only eggs laid in true dragon form, and the hatchlings emerging from them, live as proper dragons. A child born in human form never awakens.’
If it were truly impossible, he wouldn’t have mentioned it at all. Siod had uncovered one such case in ancient records.
“If our child awakens their draconic blood, Lord will have no choice but to recognize them as one of the dragon race—there’s precedent.”
“How can they awaken it?”
“The records state that the half-blood child awakened the day they first comprehended draconic magic.”
Guinevere sighed. So, once again, she’d have to teach magic. She’d wanted to let William live exactly as he pleased this life.
“William hates magic.”
Guinevere said this while washing her face.
“That’s only because you forced him into something he couldn’t do. Teaching him draconic magic will solve the problem.”
Was that really true? As Guinevere pondered, Siod stepped closer. He pulled her into an embrace and said,
“So let’s live together.”
Guinevere stayed still for a moment, then finished her deliberation and pushed him away.
“William is at the Academy. So you’ll have to go there too. I might even recommend you for a professorship.”
“What? Why not just reveal I’m his father and live together as a family?”
“William is my son. What gives you the right to just barge in?”
Siod was dumbfounded.
“You want me to teach him draconic magic without revealing I’m his father?”
“And now you want to suddenly play the father? Have some shame. Besides, I never said I’d accept you.”
Siod stood there, mouth agape in bewilderment, before blurting out,
“Then… why did you sleep with me?”
“Because I wanted to.”
Guinevere was unapologetic. Siod stood helplessly, overwhelmed by a surge of shame, and clapped a hand over his mouth. Light enveloped his bare skin as clothes materialized around him—an involuntary magical reflex.
Guinevere marveled.
“How did you do that? Teach me.”
‘Heartless woman who only knows pure magic.’
Siod swallowed another curse he couldn’t voice aloud.
“I won’t teach you.”
Siod muttered petulantly. Guinevere glared at him and said,
“Don’t recklessly reveal his draconic heritage and confuse William. He’s sensitive enough as it is.”
“But still…”
“There’s no need to teach him draconic magic or anything of the sort. This life, I’ll let him live an ordinary, happy life. There’s only one thing I expect from you—stay by his side and protect him.”
Siod frowned.
“If they find out you’re the culprit, you’ll be the first in danger. That’s why I’ll stay beside you.”
“I can protect myself.”
Siod sneered.
“You underestimate dragons?”
Despite his mockery, Guinevere remained resolute.
“Protect William.”
“…….”
“He’s my everything.”
Faced with her sincerity, Siod had no choice but to yield. He kept losing to her, yet couldn’t win.
“Hah—they say love makes you lose.”
Siod gently tucked a stray lock of Guinevere’s hair behind her ear and said,
“I must love you, Bera.”
“Don’t talk nonsense.”
“Nonsense? How can you say that?”

Siod looked wounded, but Guinevere didn’t care.
“If you truly love me, can you swear it?”
“Huh?”
“Can you swear, pledging all your magic, that you’ll protect William no matter what?”
Siod couldn’t answer. A dragon’s oath wasn’t a simple thing.
After all, even the ‘Magician’s Oath’ had been modeled after the ‘Dragon’s Oath.’ The difference was that while breaking a magician’s oath only brought death to the oath-breaker, a broken dragon’s oath drove the dragon to madness.
“I can’t do that.”
If a moment ever came where he had to choose between saving William or Guinevere, he’d save Guinevere without hesitation. No matter how much she pleaded, he couldn’t make such an oath.
“A magic-bound oath isn’t something to make lightly. You know that, right?”
Guinevere said nothing. Troubled by her silence, Siod asked,
“…You didn’t actually make one, did you?”
Guinevere gave a soft laugh. Siod’s twisted expression was just too amusing.
“Are you insane? What oath did you make?”
Siod pressed urgently. Guinevere replied casually,
“I swore to do my utmost to ensure a girl named Larisa lives happily for a long, long time.”
Siod was horrified. Even if one made an oath, no one made one so vague and impractical.
“Are you out of your mind? Where’s the oath-binder? Cancel it immediately!”
Despite Siod’s outburst, Guinevere remained calm. Twirling a strand of hair, she answered,
“She’s dead.”
Her tone was serene. That only infuriated Siod more. Now it couldn’t be undone. She truly was mad.
“Why on earth would you make such an oath? Are you suicidal?”
“I had no choice—I needed to take the daughter from a woman named Marina.”
“‘Live happily for a long, long time’? What kind of vague promise is that? You should’ve specified a clear timeframe, like until her twentieth birthday. And what even is ‘my utmost’? Why make such a flimsy, meaningless vow…?”
As Siod launched into a long rant, Guinevere swept her hair back irritably and snapped,
“Who doesn’t know that?”
“So you did it knowingly?”
“Yes. Because it’s what we all wished for—Marina’s, mine, and William’s.”
Siod fell silent.
“What exactly happened all this time?”
“…It’s a long story.”
