I'll Be the Queen of the Enemy Country (Completed Main Story) - Chapter 9
The story flowed smoothly.
“If you do what I ask, I’ll fulfill everything Your Highness desires.”
Elise, afraid Karan might refuse, laid down her hand first.
“Do you… know what I want?”
“The revival and unification of Titris. And the stability of the monarchy.”
One reason Titris was looked down upon by Bedroka was that Titris had only recently emerged from a tribal confederation.
Until about fifty years ago, Titris had been ruled alternately by three noble houses.
Fifty years ago, Karan’s grandfather subdued the other houses and transformed Titris into a royal dynasty.
That was how Karan Lisandro became Karan Lisandro Titris.
Thus, Titris was practically a newborn nation, and its unity was fragile.
Chaos was inevitable, and many schemed to seize the throne.
In his previous life, Karan had dreamed of reviving Titris through a strong monarchy.
Though he never achieved that dream before Elise’s death, given the many enemies both within and beyond his borders.
But that wasn’t all he wanted.
“You understand precisely. It’s as if you’ve known me for a long time.”
Karan’s voice lowered. His suspicion, present since their first meeting, deepened.
She knew him in a strangely intimate way.
As far as Karan remembered, they’d never met under circumstances that would make her remember him.
“I looked into you separately.”
“You mean… about me?”
Elise gave a light nod.
“Why?”
“Would ‘because I was interested’ be an acceptable answer?”
Elise lifted the corners of her lips. It was a bewitching smile that could captivate any man—whether he fancied her or not.
Karan’s ears turned red. To hide it, he pretended to brush back his hair, covering his ears.
He was flustered—it was utterly unexpected that she’d taken an interest in him.
“Well? Will you join hands with me?”
Elise leaned forward toward Karan. Her scent brushed past his nose.
A brief silence fell. The longer it stretched, the more anxious Elise became.
Her action was, to put it kindly, bold; to be honest, it was reckless.
Yet she’d found the courage precisely because Karan had come to see her just before her death in her past life.
Whatever his reason for visiting her then, she believed he’d at least listen to her words.
And her faith was rewarded.
Karan didn’t push Elise away—not that he welcomed her warmly either.
Should she retreat now?
Just as Elise hesitated,
he tilted his head slightly left and fixed his gaze intently on her seated across from him.
A noble of Bedroka requesting a night with a Titris native, whom they called barbarians.
“Why?”
“As I said earlier, it will be helpful.”
“For me? Or for you?”
“For both of us.”
Karan exhaled a long, slow breath. His chest rose and fell deeply.
She was a woman so pure and clear that touching her felt shameless. So beautiful he could hardly bear to look at her directly.
If possible, he wanted to keep her close, like a jewel he wouldn’t show to anyone.
Yet Karan hesitated—precisely because it was Elise.
“Are you serious? Unlike Titris, purity is highly valued in Bedroka.”
“Do you wish to hear me say I won’t hold you responsible?”
Her eyes, looking up at him with chin raised, were defiant.
Karan’s throat went dry. He brushed back his unruly hair, which hadn’t grown properly.

“I’m saying I will take responsibility. Before that.”
Karan took Elise’s hand resting on the table.
Gently, he uncurled her fingers and slid his own between hers.
Compared to his, her hand was endlessly small, slender, and unmarred by a single scar.
A tiny hand that clearly revealed her life had been smooth and untroubled, unlike Karan’s.
That hand trembled faintly.
‘Is she nervous?’
Her trembling shook Karan. Slowly, he stroked her palm.
If you’re truly sincere, perhaps I’ll pretend not to notice and hold on.
Karan had no intention of warning her that where he stood was a pit of fire.
Like a perfectly ripe fruit, exuding a scent that promised no harm if tasted, he lifted Elise’s hand.
Elise swallowed hard.
Keeping his eyes locked on Elise’s tense face, Karan pressed his lips to the pulse point inside her wrist.
“It won’t be a comfortable night.”
He accepted Elise’s proposal. Her heart pounded. The spot his lips had touched burned as if scorched.
“What must I do?”
Elise bit and released her lip. She furrowed her brows.
“Hold me.”
“Then.”
Scrape—the sound of a chair sliding back. A large shadow soon enveloped Elise’s petite frame. A long, rough hand lifted her chin.
“Don’t look away. Look me straight in the eyes and tell me clearly—what should I do?”
It sounded like a suggestion, yet carried the weight of a command. The tense atmosphere made Elise grip her dress tightly.
Elise met his eyes exactly as he wished.
His pupils burned fiercely. A single touch might ignite the spark and consume her entirely.
“Hurry.”
Just moments ago, he’d been composed, calmly dissecting and pondering Elise’s proposal. Now, that composure vanished—he grew impatient.
He bent his waist. Stopping just shy of touching her, he rasped her name as if forcing it out.
“Elise.”
“Hold… hold me, Your Highness Karan.”
As if that were the signal, he swept Elise up into his arms.
[This is the timeline separator]Elise undid Karan’s shirt. Beneath it lay broad shoulders no noble who’d only ever held a pen could possess.
Elise paused, breath held, and stared at him.
His raven-black hair and obsidian eyes—rare in Veronika—were mesmerizing.
His sharp eyes gleamed with intelligence, and the gentle smile at his lips inspired trust.
He was truly handsome, even upon second glance. Elise recalled their first meeting at the banquet.
The memory was astonishingly vivid.
‘Even back then, I thought he was handsome. Others said he looked rough, though.’
While Elise was lost in thought, soft bedding touched her back.
She was already on the bed.
“Don’t regret it. It’s already too late.”
She’d made up her mind the moment she resolved to meet Karan—no need for him to say it.
Now, she neither regretted nor wished to turn back.
Strangely, she felt calm. Yet separately from that, her body steadily grew warmer.
Instead of answering, Elise tugged at Karan’s loosened shirt collar.
His steady gaze burned her throat—she’d rather block his view.
Karan’s lips barely grazed Elise’s.
A jolt of sensation shot through her body.
Karan lowered himself deeply. His breath warmed Elise’s ear.
It was true—Titris natives ran hot.

His scorching breath and body heat pushed Elise to her limit.
Elise turned her eyes sideways to study Karan’s profile—the prominent brow ridge, high nose bridge, full lips.
Karan gently bit Elise’s lower lip.
It was the beginning of a night painted in vivid hues.
His warning—that it wouldn’t be comfortable—had meant he wouldn’t let her be at ease.
Karan kept his word exactly.
All night long, Elise learned how pleasure and pain intertwined.
Exquisite pleasure sometimes became pain, and dizzying pain delivered endless pleasure.
Truly, it was a night of indulgence.
[This is the timeline separator]The next day, Karan woke in high spirits.
He felt like the luckiest man alive.
Elise was the woman he’d long held in his heart. Believing he could never have her, he’d only watched from afar.
Yet she’d come to him first—and willingly fallen into his arms.
He was so happy he wouldn’t even resent being struck by lightning while walking down the street.
But Karan’s mood soon plummeted.
The place where Elise, who’d given him rapture all night, should have been was completely empty.
Barefoot, Karan searched every corner of the Pig’s Tail Pub. Elise had vanished without a trace.
“What… could it have really been a dream?”
Back in his room, Karan muttered dejectedly, roughly running his fingers through his hair.
It couldn’t have been a dream.
The sensation of her skin clinging to his hands remained vividly alive.
Had he pushed her too hard until dawn, and she’d grown weary?
The cold bed froze his heart.
“Your Highness, about breakfast… what are you doing?”
Hartvin, Karan’s trusted aide, stopped short upon entering the room.
Karan, clad only in a robe and pacing anxiously, looked unfamiliar.
“Elise is gone.”
“Elise? Who’s Elise? Elise—surely not that Elise?”
Hartvin’s eyes nearly popped out. Karan glared at him. Hartvin quickly slapped his own lips.
“You blabbering fool! Do you mean Lady Elise Warton, Your Highness?”
“Yes. Elise was definitely here yesterday. But she disappeared without a word.”
Was Karan exhausted lately?
Or had he gone mad from singing “Elise, Elise”?
Knowing Karan’s hopeless infatuation, Hartvin considered his own guess quite reasonable.
“You think I dreamed it, don’t you?”
“N-no, no way. Absolutely not.”
Hartvin’s awkward tone made him slap his own lips again.
“Hard to believe, but it’s true. She definitely spent the night with me.”
Karan emphasized his words as if convincing himself.
“Yes, of course. Nights are for eating, not spending—wait, spending the night?”
This was a series of shocks. Hartvin seriously considered requesting a mental evaluation for Karan.
Then Hartvin spotted a neatly folded note on the nightstand.
“But Your Highness, have you seen that?”
Following Hartvin’s gaze, Karan quickly snatched up the note.
It was left by Elise.
So the passionate night had indeed been real.
Now that she was in his grasp, he wouldn’t let her go—
even if last night became Elise’s regret.
With a deep smile, Karan brought the note she’d left to his nose and inhaled slowly.
