I'll Abandon the Fake Savior (Completed Main Story) - Chapter 27

While lying in bed, Daisy knocked on the door. When I told her to come in, the door opened silently.

“Miss, I brought some warm milk with a bit of salt. Before coming here, the Duke told me about it. He said that when you were young and couldn’t sleep, you drank milk with salt.”

“…Father? How did he know that?”

“He read it in a diary, he said. He also gave me this cup. There was a note saying it’s the cup you used when you were young.”

The milk was in a rough wooden cup. It was something Jorgen had carved himself when young Yuricien found a ceramic cup too heavy. The memory of Andersen chuckling, saying it was quite a sight to see the great Windsor carving wood for his daughter, came to mind.

“After I grew up a bit, I stopped using it because it was deemed unrefined for a lady…”

I didn’t know Jorgen had kept it. My nose stung for no reason.

“Thank you.”

Yuricien said in a choked voice. Thankfully, Daisy just smiled softly without saying things like “cheer up” or “be strong” and left the room.

As I sipped the savory milk with salt, a warm feeling slid down my throat, melting the chill that had gripped my body. Perhaps because of the savory taste, I suddenly felt a hunger I hadn’t noticed before. Yuricien drank all the milk in one sitting.

Fiddling with the empty cup, Yuricien gave a faint smile without realizing it.

“How can a person’s heart be so fickle?”

Just moments ago, Yuricien had uncharacteristically thought of herself as a tragic heroine. That there was nothing to believe in, that her situation was too pitiful.

But this one cup of warm milk eased that lonely feeling a little. Even when it felt like she was cast out into a harsh world, upon reflection, she wasn’t alone.

Even if the whole world hated Yuricien and tried to crush her, there was a father who would walk a thousand miles with water cupped in his hands to offer her a sip. Even if it wasn’t an expensive parasol, there was a butler who would plant the broadest taro leaf to shield her from harsh light.
