Yuricien muttered blankly.

“I see.”

Strangely enough, though Yuricien agonized over where the shabby door before her—leading from the secret passage she stood in—might go, she never once doubted that the voice shouting belonged to Heathcliff.

Daisy, who had been covering her mouth, looked up at Yuricien in surprise. Her brown eyes trembled uncontrollably. Without thinking, Daisy blurted out,

“Do you really believe that? ……So quickly?”

Realizing she shouldn’t have asked, Daisy hastily bowed her head. There was a white note on the floor. Above Daisy’s head, Yuricien’s voice dropped flatly—utterly exhausted, hollow, and frail like that of a withered old man.

“How could I possibly mistake His Highness the Crown Prince’s voice?”

Fifteen long years. For fifteen years, she had loved him, dreamed of him. The affection she’d felt toward the one who saved her life when she nearly died had never faded for even a single moment all this time. And the devotion, purity, and love she’d nurtured through the years hadn’t betrayed her even now.

“……I’m sorry.”

Daisy choked back a sob. Paradoxically, Yuricien’s unnerving calm struck her more deeply than any sorrow could have. She knew it was a question she shouldn’t have asked, and now regretted her careless words even more.

‘What can I possibly do?’

Anxiously, she wiggled her toes inside her leather shoes. Daisy wanted to say something to Yuricien. She didn’t know what words of comfort to offer—or rather, she wasn’t even sure if she could offer any comfort at all—but she couldn’t bear leaving Yuricien alone with the thought that she was by herself.

For Daisy, the clean slip of paper fluttering down onto the floor provided the perfect excuse.

“Um… Miss….”

Daisy quietly called out to Yuricien. In her hand was the note that had fallen beneath the door. Before Yuricien could take it, Heathcliff shouted again.
