Late at night, the splashing water sounded languid.

Bathing in water so hot it could redden the skin, without even adding bath salts, seemed less to relax the bather and more to heighten his tension. From the very start, Heathcliff, who was soaking in the tub, held a glass filled with undiluted brandy.

He hadn’t entered the bath to wind down his day in the first place.

“…….”

The water was so scalding it bordered on torture. Combined with the alcohol he was drinking, he might as well have been under the influence of narcotics. It was just as Heathcliff had emptied half his glass.

A small commotion erupted outside.

“!”

His hand slipped, and the glass tumbler shattered on the tub floor with a sharp sound. Heathcliff leapt up instantly, scanning his surroundings with a terrified expression.

“Who’s there!”

Heathcliff shouted. His sharp voice echoed through the bathroom, which had previously been filled only with the gentle sound of water. Yet no matter how much time passed, silence reigned beyond the bathroom door.

“Was it my imagination…?”

Just as he tried to sit back down, something cold landed on Heathcliff’s shoulder.

“Hm?”

Thinking it might be condensed steam, Heathcliff lightly brushed his shoulder—and his eyes flew wide open in shock.
