Meeting with Greta wasn’t particularly difficult. Of course, Heathcliff hadn’t expected he’d be able to see her so easily.

He had merely said he wanted to see Greta, and before the morning sun had fully risen, she appeared in Heathcliff’s bedroom.

“Did you summon me, Your Highness?”

Unlike Heathcliff, whose rough face was now covered in an unkempt, scruffy beard, Greta still retained her distinctive beauty and gave a gentle smile. Her words, spoken as she removed her hood, were so ordinary that Heathcliff felt utterly deflated.

‘If it was going to be this easy, why orchestrate such a massive search across the empire and leave me to suffer in the capital?’

Resentment rose to the very tip of his throat. Yet he knew that no matter how much he resented her, her reply would always be the same: “Everything was for your sake.” Knowing this, Heathcliff chose to skip useless words and get straight to the point.

“It’s been a long time, Mother.”

“Yes, indeed it has. Have you been well?”

He wanted to retort—how could she ask if he’d been well after seeing his face? In truth, she surely knew exactly how he’d fared in her absence.

‘And she must also know what happened between Yuricien and me today.’

She likely knew everything—the Rat King’s approach to Heathcliff, and Heathcliff’s tacit acceptance of it. Perhaps that was precisely why she’d left without a word, forcing him to endure hardship in the capital.

To make sure Heathcliff keenly felt her absence. To force him to confront the truth that without her, he was nothing but a foolish, half-witted fool. Heathcliff felt sickened by Greta’s behaviors, which she called “love.”

After barely catching his breath and swallowing his anger, Heathcliff looked Greta straight in the eyes and spoke.

“I have something I wish to say to you, Mother.”

“You have something to say to me? Well then, what could that possibly be?”
