Inside the narrow crate, Roxiana gazed endlessly up at Floyd. Her eyes, the green of spring grass, were rimmed in gold like sunlight filtering through dense foliage. Though it had been many long years since he last saw those eyes, he knew at once he wasn’t mistaken.
Her body looked frail, as if from prolonged poor meals—her skin dry, hair tangled, and lips chapped and cracked.
The lively spirit of the little girl who once ran from Idel Palace to deliver an umbrella to her brothers was gone from her entirely. Yet Floyd was certain she was the very princess he remembered.
In that instant, indescribable emotions overwhelmed Floyd.
