As it turned out, the “welcome ceremony” my parents mentioned this morning was actually for Timothy.

It’s not like Connecticut and Boston are that far apart—why hold a welcome ceremony?

I reluctantly got into Timothy’s sports car and ended up at some restaurant.

“Why a set-course meal?”

The place we arrived at was a French fine-dining restaurant.

Normally, whenever we ate out, we either went to a cheap local place or, if I insisted enough, to Koreatown.

Yet here Timothy was, pushing me into an obviously lavish and expensive French restaurant. After confirming our reservation, we walked inside—and my parents were already there.

“Timothy! Our son!”

My parents shot up from their seats and took turns hugging him tightly.

Bored, I watched the three of them for a moment before interrupting.

“How long has it even been since you last saw him? It’s only been a few months since he started school.”

“Honey, your brother came all this way—let’s just sit down first. We’ll talk over dinner.”

As he said, our neighborhood and Boston, where Harvard is located, aren’t particularly far apart.

There wasn’t even any special occasion to celebrate—yet this excessive display of affection. Well, I guess this family’s love really is unique. Maybe this worry-free, harmonious household is just another trope of a teen drama.

Even as I sat down, I couldn’t help but mutter complaints.
