Ugh, that name already, first thing in the morning?

Timothy is Juno’s older brother and the protagonist of Season 1 of . He’s also one of the people least compatible with me.

I barely managed to hide my grimace as I turned around.

“No. We don’t really keep in touch. How about you, Oppa?”

“He’s been so busy with school that I haven’t heard from him at all. With how chaotic things are in our country already… I just wonder if he’s gotten himself into some dangerous situation.”

“Really?”

Timothy Huntington, Juno’s older brother and the male lead of the drama, had been accepted into Harvard the moment Season 1 wrapped up.

He’s currently living together with his girlfriend—the female lead, Jessica—in Boston.

Having watched on-screen how he effortlessly got into Harvard with just a few lines of an essay and some random sports activities, Timothy naturally struck me as someone hard to like.

But since I couldn’t openly show my dislike, I decided to just give vague, agreeable responses.

“I’ll tell him not to go anywhere too dangerous if I hear from him. You never know when a Gate might open in Boston, so he should be careful.”

My parents turned to me, looking as if they’d just heard something strange.

“We’re not really worried about Gates. We just wish he’d stay in touch! Do you really think a Gate would be a threat to Timothy?”

“I wouldn’t know—I’m still a non-Awakened, after all. But if it’s dangerous enough for Timothy, wouldn’t that mean all Americans are in danger too?”

“What are you talking about?”

They continued discussing something I couldn’t make any sense of.

As I checked my wristwatch and drank my milk, a long honk sounded from outside the house.

Paaaaaang—.

“What’s that?”

I turned my head and peered out through the wide kitchen window.

Beyond the window lay a lush green garden, thick shrubs lining a stone wall, and just beyond the wall, a glimpse of a blue car.

“…What’s a car doing here?”

Something felt uneasy. Why would such a sleek, expensive-looking car suddenly appear in front of our house?

Keeping my eyes locked on the car outside, I hastily spoke up.

“I think I’ll head off to school now. You two take your time coming out—take it as slow as possible!”

“Alright. Be safe, sweetheart! We love you!”

I gulped down the rest of my milk, wiped my mouth roughly with the back of my hand, and bolted out the door.

I crossed the garden and swung open the front gate to find a blue two-seater sports car parked there.

And a familiar face, too.

“Hello, Squirrel.”

It was Victor McQueen.

Seeing him wave from the driver’s seat, my face instantly hardened. I strode up and stood right in front of him.

“What are you doing here? How did you even find my house?”

“I asked Ms. Jina. She told me when I said I wanted to strengthen our teamwork as teammates.”

Victor placed particular emphasis on the words “as teammates.” Then he rested his arm on the window frame, propped his chin up, and let out a long sigh.

“Now that we’re on the topic, let’s exchange numbers. How about I give you a ride to school every day from now on, Four-Eyes?”

“Why would you do that?”

“Why? Well…”

He lazily ran a finger along his jaw like a well-fed lion and shrugged his shoulders.

“Well, we’re on the same team now, aren’t we? Not that I chose it willingly—someone went and told Ms. Jina I was a high-tier Awakened.”

“…”

“So, are you getting in or not? I’m not the kind of guy who’d go around calling himself someone else’s chauffeur. But honestly, as teammates, we’ve barely talked at all. That’s why I came over—to have a proper conversation.”

“A conversation? I’m not really—”

Before I could firmly refuse, Victor grinned.

“You wouldn’t seriously refuse to talk to me after forcing me onto the same team, would you? Right, Clueless Glasses?”

“Grrrgh…”

I clenched my fists and stomped my feet in frustration at the Kingkiss guy who’d declared himself my chauffeur.

He was still holding a grudge about me pushing him into the dungeon team.

But well—it was my own doing, so what could I say?

Realizing there was no way out, I silently walked around the car and got into the passenger seat.

This damn Ford convertible was only a two-seater, so I had no choice but to sit right next to Victor.

As soon as I shut the passenger door, Victor smiled even more broadly, clearly satisfied. A dimple appeared on his sun-kissed skin.

I narrowed my eyes, displeased by his smug look.

“Shall we go, Miss Clueless Glasses?”

Fine. Let’s see just how far this ride will take us.

After glancing at his annoyingly handsome profile, I sank back into my seat and muttered,

“Sure, Queen.”

“…?”

“Let’s go to school. Drive.”

Victor, who’d just turned the ignition, looked at me with a puzzled expression.

I mirrored his earlier pose, draping my arm over the window frame and gazing at him with practiced ease.

“What? Don’t you like being called ‘Queen’?”

“…”

“You call me ‘Clueless Glasses’ or ‘Squirrel,’ and everyone else seems to call you ‘Vic.’ Why can’t I call you whatever I want? After all, we’re on the same. team.”

I smirked, and Victor let out an exasperated chuckle.

Everyone else called him Vic, but I wanted to call him Queen—taken from “McQueen.”

Of course, just like how he teased me with “Clueless,” I was only calling him that to annoy him.

“So… ‘Queen’ is my nickname now, huh?”

Nickname? No—it’s just to piss you off.

But contrary to what I expected—that he’d grimace or shudder at the awkward nickname—Victor merely squinted his eyes slightly and smiled at me.

“I like it. My nickname, used only by you.”

“…”

“Keep calling me that from now on, Glasses?”

Then, as if something amused him, he even hummed a tune while starting the engine and driving off.

I hadn’t even gotten my revenge back.

‘He really is a strange one.’

[This is the timeline separator]

But no matter how I thought about it, going to school with Victor wasn’t a good idea.

In fact, it was making me incredibly exhausted.

Even while driving, Victor persistently bombarded me with questions.

“At Thompson’s house party, I was stuck in a situation where I couldn’t use my skill—and then you suddenly popped up, clung to me like a squirrel, and somehow made my problem disappear! I can’t explain the details, but you’ve interfered in my life!”

“I told you—I have no idea what you’re talking about!”

All the way to school, Victor kept going on about how I’d unlocked his skill. Then he started talking about this mysterious “me” who’d suddenly rolled into his life—annoyingly so.

‘No matter what, I can’t possibly tell you anything.’

How could I possibly confess that I’d directly interfered with his skill, when I had no idea how things would turn out?

I deliberately shifted my gaze from Victor to outside the car. In the distance, the school building was steadily drawing closer.

“Queen, instead of stopping at the front gate, drop me off at the back path, by the walking trail.”

“Why bother?”

“Because walking in with you would draw too much attention. You said you’d be my driver yourself, so you’ll do as I say without complaint, right, Queen? Or would a chauffeur dare refuse his passenger?”

I smiled as I spoke, and though Victor grumbled, he obediently turned the steering wheel and headed toward the quiet walking path near the school.

Victor’s Ford came to a stop on a narrow trail by the hillside. I immediately got out of the passenger seat, grabbed my bag, and dashed toward the school before he could say a word.

“Hey, Glasses! Come on, let’s go together!”

Ignoring Victor’s voice behind me, I quickly slipped inside the building.

Ah, so that’s why they made us train basic stamina—just for moments like this.

Thankfully, I managed to avoid entering the school building together with Victor.

I headed straight to my locker and shoved my things inside. As I slammed the door shut—

“Ah! What the—!”

—a couple was suddenly clinging to each other right beside me, engaging in an overly affectionate display.

“My sweetie, my handsome. You worked so hard coming to school today.”

“You have to come early if you want to see your gorgeous me. You’re my sunshine, after all.”

Leaning against the lockers, they kept cooing ridiculous pet names at each other.

Do these shameless lovebirds have no awareness that this is a place of learning?

Of all places, why did they have to do this right next to my locker?

‘Ah, no—this is just America.’

Seeing these inconsiderate people who show no regard for place or situation made my stomach churn.

And it wasn’t just this. Cheek-kissing as a greeting was common, and it was frequent to see couples passionately making out on the streets, making you frown in discomfort.

After a year of trying to adapt to high school life here, I thought I’d adjusted fairly well—but there were still two things that felt completely foreign to me.

One: grown men and women smooching anywhere without hesitation.

Two: people climbing onto beds while still wearing shoes.

“Juno? What are you doing here?”

As I tried to calm my churning stomach, frowning deeply, a familiar voice called out to me.

I turned around to find Adrian already standing close by, looking down at me with a gentle smile.

“Oh—Adrian. Did you call me?”

“Yeah. I’ve been calling you for a while—what were you so deep in thought about?”

The moment Adrian appeared with his cheerful smile, the gloomy, overcast sky from just moments ago suddenly cleared up.

Whether it was the “male lead effect” or something else, I briefly squinted at the sunlight breaking through the dispersing storm clouds.

What was I thinking about?

Glancing at the sunlight glinting on Adrian’s blond hair, I recalled the cringeworthy scenes I’d just witnessed.

A few days ago, a certain crazy couple had snuck into our garage to go on a date. Last night, another couple sat on our garden wall, kissing passionately.

Without thinking, I mumbled,

“Oh, just thinking about… kissing…”

Chapter Comments (176)

  1. Sign Bet Chapter 22

The pacing of this story is honestly so good. Every chapter just flows perfectly into the next and keeps me hooked.

  2. Sign Bet Chapter 35
I am actually wheezing at Victor’s immediate, cat-like panic the second Juno mentioned bringing Adrian to the game. He was acting so incredibly smug and confident about his guaranteed victory, but the mere thought of another guy going with her completely threw him off. It is so funny how transparent he is about wanting her all to himself.
  3. Sign Bet Chapter 36
I am actually wheezing at Juno dramatically raising her arms like a stage performer to convince those occult nerds that their cursed juice had “ominous spiritual energy” inside it. She literally saved them from severe food poisoning by making up a whole Level-One classified secret on the spot. Her inner monologue about them being better off getting bitten by a radioactive spider was absolute peak comedy.
