A fierce glint flickered in the red eyes that had always gazed at her with indifference.

Zieghart’s brows furrowed momentarily at her words before quickly smoothing back into place. Then, the corners of his eyes briefly lifted upward, as if her request were deeply irritating.

It wasn’t an entirely unexpected reaction. Her list of demands truly was filled with troublesome stipulations, so his sharp response was understandable.

“Please grant my request.”

Yet, Natasha couldn’t back down. Having once endured misfortune didn’t make one numb to suffering.

Those conditions she’d laid out were precisely measures to prevent tragedy—but even they were merely temporary fixes.

“Your Grace may believe I gain much from this marriage, but in truth, this proposal is unwelcome to me. I hope you understand.”

“So you intend to replace this unsatisfactory proposal with these petty conditions?”

“Well, consider them supplementary.”

Despite his sharp retorts, Natasha calmly replied several times before finally lifting her head.

“With your agreement today, Your Grace has gained considerable advantage.”

There was no sign of a reply.

Having spent so much time with him, Natasha instantly recognized this as his way of demanding an explanation. When confused, he never asked directly—instead, he’d fall into an arrogant silence, waiting for the other to elaborate.

“I don’t know your reasons, but Your Grace did propose to me—going so far as to track down someone who’d vanished without a trace. Please don’t claim it was mere coincidence. I know your arranged meetings are artificial necessities disguised as chance.”

Still, no answer came. It was another of his habits—an arrogant prompt to keep speaking, since he was clearly listening.
