Christoph clicked his tongue softly. It seemed he had made another mistake. The problem was that he didn’t even know what that mistake was.

Christoph kept his lips tightly shut and followed Marien. He didn’t want to hurt her feelings any further.

Marien arrived at the blue front door and silently climbed the steps. As she reached to open the door, she slowly turned around. Christoph stood there, motionless.

His face was obscured by the faint glow of the gas lamp behind him. She stared at him blankly for a moment, hesitated briefly, then opened the front door.

“Be careful on your way home, Christoph.”

“Wait.”

Christoph suddenly spoke up. Marien, who had begun to turn away, looked back at him again.

Christoph rubbed his jaw with his thin hand, fidgeting nervously as if struggling to utter something difficult. A raspy, sandpaper-like voice slipped out from between his teeth.

“May I come in for a cup of tea?”

Marien looked at him wordlessly. Then, slowly, she raised her gaze toward the sky darkened by night.

“At this hour?”

Christoph secretly let out a sigh of relief. Her question wasn’t whether they were close enough to share tea—it was merely an observation that it was late.

That alone gave him renewed courage. Christoph slowly lifted his chin and met her eyes directly. He subtly raised the envelope of documents he held in his hand.

“It’s Veronica’s case file.”
