Marien walked alone down the street shrouded in darkness. While she had been eating, the sun had fully set, and the gas lamps had begun to flicker to life one by one.
Liam swept his well-groomed brown hair back once and started walking in the opposite direction from her—without even a word of farewell to Christoph, as if his earlier warmth had merely been a mask.
But Christoph felt the same indifference toward him. Had it not been for Marien, he would never have spoken to him at all.
Christoph stood rooted to the spot, watching Marien’s retreating back.
