Marien absentmindedly lifted her eyes. As if he had been waiting, she met his deep, dark gaze. His stare was persistent and intense.

An uneasy tension filled the air. Wherever his eyes touched, her skin prickled and her body twisted involuntarily. She couldn’t even breathe deeply—her own breath sounded too raw, too exposed.

Eventually, flustered, she looked away from him once again. And just as before, his serpentine, unwavering eyes followed her relentlessly.

“The case file…”

Marien parted her lips, trying to shift the atmosphere. Christoph stared at her a while longer before finally handing her a document envelope.

“Here.”

Marien took it and faintly furrowed her brow, as if swallowing bitter medicine. Slowly, she opened the envelope and pulled out the papers inside.

“Only two pages.”

“…”

“Veronica’s death was summed up in just two pages of a report.”

Christoph remained silent. A hollow voice slipped past Marien’s lips.

“While sorting through mountains of files piled on the police chief’s desk, I skimmed countless reports… Even ordinary thefts or assault cases had at least five pages. Evidence, witness statements—even just the investigating detective’s opinion alone would fill three or four pages…”

For a moment, her voice trembled faintly. Christoph wondered if she might cry.

But Marien didn’t shed tears. She bit down hard on her lip and endured that moment.

Only then did he recall that she hadn’t cried even at Veronica’s funeral. Though she’d staggered as if about to collapse at any second, she had silently borne it all.
