“Your Majesty, the Empress, we’ve received word from the envoy.”

The head steward bowed and handed me a letter.

“I’ll check it. You may go.”

“Yes, Your Majesty.”

As soon as the steward left, Nathaniel emerged from the basket beneath my desk.

“What did they say?”

Nathaniel asked, fluttering his tiny wings as he climbed up.

I gently patted his head and opened the letter.

Since it had arrived by urgent dispatch, its contents were brief.

It merely stated that Anais’s wedding had concluded safely and that she would soon return with Cassian.

“The wedding went well.”

“That’s good to hear. Didn’t they mention when they’d be back?”

“The letter is dated three days ago, so they’ve likely already departed. They should arrive within a few days.”

He yawned widely, stared quietly at the letter, then leaned against my arm and lay down.

“I’m tired.”
