Nathaniel paced anxiously back and forth in front of the door.

“Your Majesty, perhaps you should sit down for a while.”
Nathaniel glanced briefly at the Duke’s face and then abruptly turned his head away.
Noticing how red and swollen Nathaniel’s eyes were—as if he might burst into tears at any moment—the Duke fell silent.

“Your Majesty! Father!”
Teresa and Maximilian, having heard the news late, had rushed over from the Duke’s residence and now arrived.
Nathaniel’s expression darkened further upon seeing their faces.
As time passed, Nathaniel grew increasingly restless. He recalled hearing somewhere that the longer labor lasted, the worse it was for the mother’s health.
‘Surely nothing’s gone wrong.’
With an ominous premonition, Nathaniel’s gaze fixed on the tightly closed door.
“Y-Your Majesty?”
“I can’t bear this anxiety any longer—I must go in.”
Teresa quickly grabbed Nathaniel as he reached for the door to enter the birthing chamber.
