Before going to bed, Ji Hoo stared at his parents’ photo and grinned from ear to ear.

“Yeah, look as much as you want. It’d be really nice if I could meet you in my dreams, right?”

Ha Yeon gently stroked the forehead of Ji Hoo, who was lying in bed. She, too, had fallen asleep many times wishing she could see her own parents even in a dream. So the sight of the child gazing at the photo again and again didn’t feel like someone else’s story.

“It’s okay if we can’t meet in dreams. I can see them like this.”

Though there weren’t many, the child who had received the keepsakes Min Je had treasured looked as if he owned the whole world. It was heartwarming, yet at the same time a corner of her heart ached sharply.

“Yes, because Mom and Dad will live forever in Ji Hoo’s heart. They’ll be watching over you no matter where you are.”

She had cried so much today, yet tears still welled up again, making the tip of her nose sting.

“Noona, do you miss Mom and Dad too?”

At Ji Hoo’s question, eyes wide and looking up at her, Ha Yeon answered in a tear-choked voice.

“Yeah, I miss them a lot.”

“Aww, so it’s not just me.”

The child smiled softly, seemingly comforted by the fact that even grown-ups missed their deceased parents.

“Yes, everyone carries at least one person they long for buried in their heart.”

Just as no one can live entirely alone, people form relationships of some kind and live together. Longing and loneliness were perfectly natural emotions needed to live side by side.

“Let’s go together next time to the charnel house where their ashes are kept.”
