David's Husband (Completed Main Story) - Chapter 3
Min Je, too, seemed just as dumbfounded, his eyebrows twitching as if dancing.
“You can’t give that as a gift.”
When he spoke firmly, tears began welling up in the child’s eyes.
“I won’t accept birthday presents for ten years. No, forever, actually.”
“Still no.”
A sigh crept into Min Je’s voice. Though Ji Hoo’s pleading expression made him want to grant even the impossible, this simply wasn’t something he could agree to.
“Dad, you’re so mean! I hate you!”
In the end, the child stormed out, kicking away from his seat.
Damn, what am I supposed to do about this? Holding her chopsticks, Ha Yeon froze stiffly, only her eyes darting back and forth as she gauged the situation.
How could anyone possibly eat in a situation like this? She’d surely end up needing digestive pills from indigestion alone.
“He’s still young—that’s why he’s like this. I’m sorry.”
Min Je apologized, dragging both hands down his weary face.
His apology, coming from a man who usually appeared aloof and prickly, caught Ha Yeon by surprise, her eyes widening briefly.
“It’s fine. More importantly, I’m worried about Ji Hoo.”
Ha Yeon glanced quickly toward the direction the child had gone.
“Ji Hoo… seemed to really take to you.”
“Oh, I met him while working part-time at a convenience store.”
Ha Yeon chuckled lightly as she explained how she’d met the boy. Hearing this, Min Je raised one eyebrow.
“So that’s why he brought back cola he doesn’t even drink.”
“What? He doesn’t drink it? So you’re saying he deliberately bought cola on purpose?”
“If you don’t believe me, just open the fridge and see for yourself.”
Min Je subtly jerked his chin toward the refrigerator in the kitchen.
Ha Yeon’s pupils wavered. All this time, she’d silently cursed his parents every time she’d seen the boy buying cola…
Trembling inwardly, she opened the fridge door. Normally, she’d never want to open someone else’s fridge, but somehow, she needed to see it with her own eyes to believe.
One neatly organized shelf inside was packed solid with cola—the very bottles Ji Hoo had bought from the convenience store over time.
‘I’ve been testing you, noona, all this while.’
Ji Hoo’s words replayed in her ears. What on earth had been going through the child’s mind each time he bought cola?
Suddenly, a bittersweet ache bloomed in her chest.
Min Je quietly watched Ha Yeon, frozen with the fridge door still open.
‘Dad, I met a noona who draws really well—and she’s super pretty!’
Ji Hoo’s proud voice overlapped with Ha Yeon’s image before him.
The boy didn’t let just anyone get close. Nearly all previous babysitters had been effectively chased away by Ji Hoo himself. It was the first time he’d introduced someone with such an expression.
‘Has he opened his heart enough to even consider her as a mother?’
Her delicate, petite face featured finely spaced eyes, nose, and mouth—almost doll-like in appearance. Dressed in a loose shirt and jeans, with her hair tied up in a simple ponytail, she looked youthful—even childlike.
Twenty-one? Maybe twenty-two? As he guessed her age, he let out a self-mocking sigh. He found it ridiculous that he’d begun seriously contemplating bringing her into their household after hearing Ji Hoo’s absurd suggestion.
Even if finding a babysitter for Ji Hoo was urgent, how could he possibly entertain such irrational thoughts about a woman he’d just met?
“Well then, I should probably…”
At Ha Yeon’s words—spoken as she returned after closing the fridge—Min Je snapped out of his reverie.
“Ah, things did take a strange turn… You’re welcome to stay for the meal, but if you’re uncomfortable, feel free to leave now.”
Yet Ha Yeon’s reply, upon returning, surprised him.
“No, I’d like to check on Ji Hoo in his room.”
Min Je’s expression shifted subtly.
‘Is she worried about the child?’
Her face almost screamed it—clearly haunted by the image of the tearful boy who’d run out.
“Of course, you may go.”
“Oh—yes, thank you.”
Min Je watched, intrigued, as Ha Yeon stood up energetically, bowed politely, and headed upstairs.
[This is the timeline separator]Knock, knock, knock. Ha Yeon cautiously tapped on Ji Hoo’s door. She waited briefly, but no sound came from within.
“Ji Hoo, may I come in?”

As she called out toward the door, the boy’s voice soon answered.
“Come in.”
Ha Yeon slowly opened the door, mentally listing 101 ways to soothe a crying child.
But to her surprise, instead of crying, the boy was drawing in a sketchbook placed on his desk.
“A-are you okay?”
Ha Yeon studied his expression carefully as she asked. Ji Hoo shrugged.
“If I keep crying, my stomach hurts.”
His tone, like that of an old sage who’d seen it all, made Ha Yeon smile faintly as she sat across from him.
“Wow, Ji Hoo, your room is seriously amazing.”
It wasn’t flattery. For a child’s room, the decor was refreshingly minimalistic, and one entire wall held books, art supplies, and toys—all neatly lined up with precise alignment.
“So what?”
The boy pouted, clearly sulking because things hadn’t gone his way.
How could she soften his mood?
“Ji Hoo, I can’t be your mom… but maybe I can be your friend? You could visit me at my place, and whenever you come to the convenience store, we can keep seeing each other, right?”
“That’s not enough.”
His cheeks puffed out defiantly. She shouldn’t think he looked adorable while angry—but it was hard not to.
Ha Yeon deliberately held back her smile, gently meeting Ji Hoo’s gaze as she spoke.
“Then… how about I become a friend who’s like a mom? Would that still not work?”
Hmm. Ji Hoo pondered for a while before finally nodding. His reluctant acceptance made Ha Yeon burst out laughing despite herself.
The unrestrained laughter passed straight through the closed door, halting Min Je mid-step on the staircase.
Was the sound of laughter truly this unfamiliar in this house? He rubbed his jaw once, amused at himself.
The longer Ha Yeon stayed in this house, the more Min Je felt he might begin to understand Ji Hoo’s heart, just a little.
[This is the timeline separator]After Ha Yeon’s visit, the house sank deeper into an even more complete silence than before.
The clink of cutlery was the only sound at mealtimes. Today, the unusual quietness weighed heavily on Min Je, and he unconsciously raised one eyebrow.
Though father and son had never been particularly talkative, Ji Hoo had grown even more silent since Ha Yeon’s visit—as if in quiet protest.
‘Whom on earth did he inherit such stubbornness from…?’
Tsk. Min Je clicked his tongue, then absentmindedly let his gaze drift to Mi Ran, the housekeeper, as she opened and closed the fridge.
He caught a fleeting glimpse of the cola still fully occupying one shelf. Unless deliberately cleared out, those bottles would remain there indefinitely—much like her lingering presence in his thoughts.
“I think I’ll be busy preparing for an exhibition soon, so I’ll need to quickly find a permanent housekeeper…”
Min Je spoke, as if trying to break the silence, while glancing toward Ji Hoo.
Right now, Mi Ran managed both housekeeping and childcare, but that was only a temporary arrangement. He couldn’t burden her further, especially when she was already struggling with her workload.
“It has to be noona.”
Ji Hoo clutched his spoon tightly and replied stubbornly.
What? This kid’s getting worse by the minute. Min Je exhaled sharply.
Ji Hoo had never before so adamantly insisted on his own opinion. Though surprised, Min Je couldn’t ignore his son’s wishes.
Well, he’d already verified her trustworthiness—so that wasn’t the issue. Still, just because he wanted her didn’t mean she’d accept.
Surely Ji Hoo couldn’t force her either. With that thought, Min Je replied,
“I’ll ask her first. But if she declines, you must promise not to stubbornly insist anymore.”
“Yes!”
Ji Hoo’s face brightened instantly—as if he’d never been upset at all. Watching the boy’s expression flip like a switch, Min Je groaned faintly.
The next day, Min Je visited the convenience store, timing his arrival to coincide with Ha Yeon’s shift ending.
She happened to be just stepping out, bag in hand—and they ended up facing each other directly the moment he entered.
“Welcome—”
She reflexively began her greeting upon hearing the door chime, but her eyes widened in surprise when she saw Min Je.
“If it’s not inconvenient, may I have a brief word with you?”
Her eyes widened further. Her clearly unprepared reaction made Min Je wonder—what expression would she make when she heard his proposal?
Since it was early May, the weather wasn’t cold, and so they sat facing each other at a small table outside the convenience store.
Ha Yeon fidgeted with her fingertips, still unable to believe she was sitting face-to-face with Kang Min Jae—her ultimate celebrity crush.
She kept trying to suppress her gaze, which kept drifting toward his face, when Min Je spoke first.

“I’m not sure how you’ll take this, but I have a proposal to make.”
A proposal? Ha Yeon looked up, puzzled—and Min Je smoothly slid a sheet of paper toward her.
“What… is this?”
Her eyes flickered as she looked down at the document—clearly some sort of complex contract.
“I happened to be searching for someone to move in and care for the child. Under the condition that you provide appropriate interaction and all necessary care for Ji Hoo, and reside in the room next to his—how does this amount sound?”
As Ha Yeon quickly skimmed the number written on the paper, Min Je continued explaining.
“Oh, laundry and cleaning are already handled by someone else, so you’d focus solely on Ji Hoo. The only drawback is that I can’t guarantee fixed days off—though whenever Ji Hoo is at kindergarten, you’re free to do as you please.”
Ha Yeon doubted her own eyes. This compensation far exceeded what most regular jobs offered—and as an art student urgently struggling to make ends meet, she seriously doubted she’d ever encounter a better opportunity.
But accepting his offer outright felt impossible—too many concerns held her back.
“May I ask… why you’re making this offer to me specifically?”
Even she herself didn’t believe she was suitable for a babysitter role. Logically, a married woman with child-rearing experience would be far more appropriate.
“This proposal stems from respecting Ji Hoo’s wishes. He insists it must be you, Ha Yeon. Anyone I personally disapprove of tends to quit quickly from my blunt treatment—so I figured this approach would be better.”
Min Je’s honest reply made Ha Yeon blink momentarily. Just how sweet and adorable Ji Hoo was—yet people kept quitting after barely enduring his behavior?
Having grown quite attached to the boy, she found that explanation hard to believe outright. And once again, the image of his earnest, pleading eyes—begging her to become his mom—resurfaced, weighing down her heart.
Lost in hesitation, unable to answer easily, Ha Yeon suddenly snapped back to attention as she felt Min Je’s steady gaze fixed on her.
His penetrating look—paired with the face she adored most—made her heart pound wildly in her chest.
“I’m not asking for an immediate answer. Take your time to think it over before deciding.”
“I-I will.”
For now, Ha Yeon vigorously nodded, desperate to escape the overwhelming situation.
Back home, Ha Yeon’s legs inexplicably gave out, and she slowly slid down to sit on the floor. Then, jolting awake, she pulled the contract Min Je had handed her from her bag.
‘I didn’t misread it.’
After carefully reviewing the contents, she confirmed it wasn’t a mistake—and released a short sigh.
For the first time, she—a person juggling unstable part-time jobs—had been offered a stable position. Moreover, since it was a live-in babysitting role, she could even save the money she currently spent on rent.
Given that her current earnings barely covered living expenses and rent—let alone allowed any savings—this was an offer she found extremely difficult to refuse.
‘Is this luck?’
Remembering Ji Hoo’s unchildlike, faint smirk, Ha Yeon agonized over whether she should accept this as good fortune—or not.
