David's Husband (Completed Main Story) - Chapter 4
After days of deliberation, Ha Yeon finally accepted Min Je’s proposal. No matter how much she thought it over, there simply wasn’t a better option available in her current situation.
Having finished her last part-time shift, Ha Yeon packed her belongings late in the evening and headed to Ji Hoo’s house.
“Welcome.”
“Unnie!”
Housekeeper Mi Ran and Ji Hoo, who’d been waiting after receiving her prior notice, greeted her with bright smiles.
“I, uh… please take good care of me.”
After bowing in greeting and stepping inside, Mi Ran showed her to her room.
“If anything feels uncomfortable while you’re staying here, don’t hesitate to let me know.”
“Thank you. You don’t need to be so formal with me.”
“In that case, shall I drop the formality?”
Mi Ran smiled and immediately switched to casual speech. She appeared to be in her mid-fifties and seemed quite friendly.
Entering the room she’d been shown, Ha Yeon looked around slowly—and let out an involuntary “Wow.”
A king-sized bed, a desk, a walk-in closet, and even a small bathroom—all of this would now be *her* space.
‘This is way better than the studio I used to live in.’
Ha Yeon glanced down at the large suitcase she’d dragged along. She’d packed everything, yet it barely filled one suitcase—leaving her flustered and embarrassed. It really was a funny, yet sad story.
After carelessly tossing the suitcase aside, Ha Yeon headed straight to Ji Hoo’s room.
“I’m so happy Unnie’s going to live with us now!”
“You’re *that* happy?”
Smiling warmly, Ha Yeon gently stroked the boy’s round forehead.
Then she plucked a book from the shelf.
“Unnie will read you a story. It’s time for good kids to head off to dreamland.”
“Okay!”
The boy obediently replied. Judging by the sparkle in his eyes, he wasn’t sleepy at all—he was excited to see how she’d read the story. Ha Yeon chuckled softly and began reading slowly.
“It was a certain morning in December, snow falling heavily. Jamie looked out at the world turned pure white—but couldn’t feel joy like before. Because…”
After several rounds of questions and affirmations, the boy’s voice faded away. In its place came steady, even breathing.
‘So *this* is why people say sleeping children look like angels.’
Ha Yeon kissed Ji Hoo once on the forehead and tiptoed quietly out of his room.
*Grrrrumble.*
But just then—her stomach loudly protested her hunger. Only then did Ha Yeon recall she hadn’t eaten dinner.
She wasn’t bold enough to go rummaging through the kitchen on her very first day… So what now…?
Sighing, Ha Yeon turned toward her own room—only to lock eyes with Min Je in a large portrait hanging on the wall.
‘Ugh, jeez! You startled me.’
She’d have to be more careful from now on. Her heart had genuinely skipped a beat, mistaking the painted eyes for real ones.
Slightly irritated, Ha Yeon placed her hands on her hips and glared at the portrait.
“So you’re good-looking—big deal?”
But the more she stared at that portrait—overflowing not just with sex appeal but outright decadent allure—the more it truly seemed like being handsome *was* everything. Ugh, this filthy world where looks are everything!
Unable to rein in her mounting frustration, Ha Yeon pointed directly at the portrait and scolded it aloud:
“No matter how busy you are—you should *at least* make it home before your son goes to sleep!”
It was true that Kang Min Jae remained her favorite person, but it was equally true that she felt deeply disappointed. Seeing him fail as a father right from day one, Ha Yeon huffed sharply through her nose—only for someone behind her to reply:
“That’s quite unfortunate, then.”
Ha Yeon blinked rapidly, doubting her own ears.
No way. Why on earth did she just hear Kang Min Jae’s—*his*—voice? Was she hallucinating from overthinking?
Mechanically, like a broken robot, Ha Yeon turned her head—and her gaze met a pair of eyes watching her intently, their owner casually leaning against the wall.
‘Good grief! He’s actually here?!’
His eyes—far deeper and sharper than the painted ones in the portrait—locked straight onto hers, freezing her body in place.
“H-h-ha! I’ve been really into this drama lately, so I tried quoting one of its famous lines.”
Internally cursing at her own flimsy excuse, Ha Yeon frantically searched for a way to escape this crisis.
“Oh, is that so?”
When Min Je responded mechanically, embarrassment overwhelmed Ha Yeon, prompting her to hastily excuse herself:
“T-then, I’ll just… be going…”
Trending
*Ruuuuumble!*
Right at that moment, an enormous gurgle erupted from her stomach.
“How many days have you gone without eating?”
He tilted his head slightly, a faint, ambiguous smile playing on his lips. Surely it was her imagination that his sharp gaze had just softened with pity.
Flustered, Ha Yeon stammered, her face burning red:
“A-actually, I only skipped dinner today.”
Clearly not convinced, he tilted his head even further than before.
“Wait here a moment.”
After saying that, Min Je carefully opened Ji Hoo’s door and slipped inside. Only then did Ha Yeon realize he’d come to check on his sleeping son.
Min Je approached the sleeping boy, muffling his footsteps, and sat down on the edge of the bed.
He gazed down at the child, sleeping like an angel, and gently stroked his forehead once.
The sight melted away the exhaustion of a grueling day—but also left him with the nagging thought that he wasn’t truly qualified to be a father.
To him, ending each day this way—watching his sleeping son—felt bittersweet, like flipping a coin: one side sweet, the other unbearably bitter. Normally, this would trigger all kinds of thoughts, but tonight, only *one* thought filled his mind:
‘That sound was *incredibly* loud.’
He couldn’t help but chuckle softly.
He’d struggled so hard *not* to laugh in front of her earlier—so much so his stomach ached—which is why he’d instantly fled into his son’s room like a coward.
‘How could such a sound even come out of her?’
A petite woman like her must be hiding a wild beast inside her stomach—otherwise, such a deep, growling rumble couldn’t possibly emerge from a human belly.
Still chuckling, Min Je kissed Ji Hoo once more on the forehead before stepping out.
Ha Yeon stood frozen in place, looking guilty and unsure what to do next—like a child awaiting punishment.
“Let’s go. There should still be something edible in the kitchen.”
*
“There’s nothing here?”
Ha Yeon’s disappointment was evident as she peered into the barren fridge—its only occupant a single can of cola.
“Hmm?”
Min Je stroked his chin, muttering, “That’s strange.”
He was an extremely disciplined person and never ate late-night snacks. He’d even instructed Mi Ran in advance not to leave leftovers, ensuring only exact portions were prepared—any extras were either discarded or taken home at her own discretion.
Feeling Ha Yeon’s sharp gaze, Min Je scratched his face awkwardly. Judging by her expression, leaving the fridge empty apparently ranked among the gravest crimes imaginable.
“Surely… you don’t even have *ramen*?”
Ha Yeon asked desperately, clinging to that as her last sliver of hope. When she’d resolved to skip dinner and sleep, hunger had been tolerable—but the moment she decided to eat, her body grew expectant, and now her stomach churned even more violently than before.
“Wait—I think there might be some somewhere…”
Min Je began opening cabinet drawers one by one. Honestly, searching through such places was a first for him in his entire life.
“Oh!”
He let out an exclamation upon spotting something.
“You found some?”
Ha Yeon darted over like lightning.
A bundle of ramen sat on the shelf—likely bought by Mi Ran for herself.
“Thank goodness…”
Seeing Ha Yeon cradle the ramen and beam happily, Min Je was so dumbfounded he let out a breathless sigh.
Without hesitation, she cheerfully set about preparing it—then suddenly asked:
“Um… would you like some?”
“No, don’t worry about me.”
“You’re *sure*? You’ll regret it. I may look like this, but I’m actually *really* good at making ramen. And please, speak casually with me.”
He didn’t mind her nonstop chatter. That perpetual silence in this house had always felt heavy—now, somehow, warmth seeped in.
Maybe that’s why he lingered instead of leaving, taking a seat at the dining table.
“Alright then—I’ll speak casually. Honestly, I’m fine, so don’t worry.”
Since it felt awkward to keep offering food to someone who’d declined, Ha Yeon only cooked ramen for herself. Fortunately, at least a raw egg remained in the fridge, letting her at least add minimal toppings.
“I’ll dig in!”
With that cheerful announcement, Ha Yeon lifted a large forkful, blew on it gently—and then accidentally locked eyes with Min Je.
Why was this man just *watching* her eat when he wouldn’t eat himself?

Ugh, this meddling personality of mine is such a problem. Unable to just shove the noodles into her own mouth, Ha Yeon instead held them out toward him.
“Here—don’t just stare. Have just one bite.”
Min Je stared blankly at the firm noodles offered before him.
Strangely enough, the ramen’s aroma was unusually appetizing today—despite normally not giving instant noodles a second glance.
*Gulp.* He swallowed. Clearly, she was *that* good at cooking ramen—if even Kang Min Jae himself was tempted to try some.
“Well… alright, maybe just one bite?”
He reluctantly took the chopsticks she extended—
*Slurrrrp!*—the noodles slid smoothly into his mouth. Hm? Tastier than expected! The chewy strands clung satisfyingly to his tongue.
But catching Ha Yeon’s odd expression, he suddenly snapped back to his senses.
“You said *one* bite—but left only *one* behind?”
Min Je glanced down at the bowl in shock. Had he really devoured almost the entire serving in seconds?
“Don’t worry—just finish that. I’ll make another serving for myself.”
Ha Yeon bit her lip hard to suppress a laugh at the utterly baffled furrow in Min Je’s brow, then stood up.
She *shouldn’t* think a fully grown man was cute—but his expression made it impossible *not* to.
Well, my ramen *is* delicious, after all. Filled with pride over crafting such addictive noodles, Ha Yeon nodded to herself and cooked *two more servings*, dividing them between two bowls.
“Have more. No need to refuse.”
Min Je cleared his throat softly and murmured in reply:
“I will. It’s delicious.”
His clumsy expression of emotion made her heart flutter warmly.
He’d seemed so intimidating at first—but now, she wondered if she’d misjudged him.
“Phew! Now that I’ve eaten, I feel human again.”
As Ha Yeon patted her belly, Min Je alternated his gaze between her and his own empty bowl—feeling as if he’d been possessed by a ghost.
“Finally, for dessert—drink this.”
She popped open one of the many colas lined up in the fridge and handed it to him.
Normally, he never drank soda—but before he realized it, he was already grimacing and accepting the can, taking a sip.
“Seriously—what kind of spell did you cast on me?”
He asked, genuinely bewildered.
“It wasn’t *that* amazing. Next time, with better ingredients, I’ll make you something truly special.”
Min Je’s eyebrow arched as he watched Ha Yeon confidently interpret his words her own way.
[This is the timeline separator]The next morning, Ha Yeon awoke to her alarm and blinked dazedly.
Looking up at the unfamiliar ceiling, she gasped and bolted upright.
“Oh no—I can’t believe I overslept! I need to get Ji Hoo to kindergarten!”
Half-heartedly splashing water on her face, she rushed upstairs to Ji Hoo’s room—only to find it empty.
She then thundered down the stairs, only to find Ji Hoo and Mi Ran eating breakfast in the kitchen, staring at her wide-eyed, as if wondering what chaos had erupted.
“Ahaha—Ji Hoo really wakes up early, huh?”
Ha Yeon forced an awkward smile as she sat beside the boy, who promptly replied:
“It’s Unnie who woke up late.”
Stung by his merciless truth-bomb first thing in the morning, Ha Yeon silently vowed to wake up *earlier* than Ji Hoo tomorrow.
“Want some rice?”
Mi Ran asked with a smile—but Ha Yeon shook her head. Last night’s overeating had left her face puffy and her stomach uneasy.
“Really? Guess you’re usually not a breakfast person?”
“No, it’s just… my stomach feels a bit off today.”
Mi Ran’s eyes softened slightly as she quietly listened.
“Hmm—funny thing: Director Kang also said he wouldn’t eat breakfast today. Even though he *always* eats it.”
*What on earth are you imagining?!* It’s *not* what you think—even if I don’t know *what* exactly you’re thinking! Ha Yeon bit back the retort and instead groaned pitifully.
Just then, Ji Hoo set down his spoon, signaling he’d finished.
Glancing at the time, Ha Yeon realized the kindergarten shuttle would arrive soon, so she quickly stood up.
“Ji Hoo, if we leave now, we can catch the bus.”
Other than occasional rides with the chauffeur when Min Je went to work, Ji Hoo—ever the disciplined, mature child—typically took the kindergarten bus to and from school.

But the boy didn’t follow her. Instead, he just kept staring silently at Ha Yeon.
“What? D-do I have something on my face?”
Flustered, Ha Yeon began patting her cheeks.
“Unnie… I don’t think I can go with you today.”
*Sigh.* The boy exhaled briefly.
“What? Did something happen to my face—why the sigh?”
“I wanted to show you off to my friends, but… I don’t think I can today.”
He trailed off, clearly holding back something he badly wanted to say. *Thud.* Ha Yeon’s face fell in shock.
So… what Ji Hoo’s saying is… *I’m embarrassing*?!
“I’ll go with Auntie today. See you later, Unnie.”
While Ha Yeon stood speechless, mouth agape, Ji Hoo waved casually and left with Mi Ran.
“Why?! What’s wrong with my face?! Am I *really* that embarrassing?!”
Ha Yeon huffed indignantly and stomped over to the mirror—only to freeze.
Who *are* you?
Staring back was a woman with a puffy face, eyes swollen to half their usual size.
The ramen had been the culprit. Eating a double-serving of ramen late at night out of hunger had, predictably, left her face bloated.
“No matter how you look at it…”
She’d been abandoned.
Depressed, she shuffled toward the living room—when *click*, the front door opened, and Min Je stepped out.
The moment she saw his face, Ha Yeon couldn’t help but burst into laughter—
Because *he*, too, was puffed up just like her.
