Can an Enemy Become Salvation? (Completed Main Story) - Chapter 3
“I heard you haven’t left your room lately—so you’re still alive after all. I was so worried I thought you’d just dropped dead.”
Noticing the disdainful look in her eyes and the mocking tone contradicting her words, Ivenel decided to hear her out.
Calling her a bastard made it painfully obvious how she’d been treated growing up.
“What do you want to say?”
“You should consider it an honor to go to Caries for Aodin’s sake, given your station. After all, you’d have ended up as some old baron’s concubine otherwise. Well, I suppose it’s a shame you’ll miss the fine match Mother arranged for you. So just stay quiet until then, acting your part as an older sister.”
When Serina tapped Ivenel’s shoulder with her finger, Ivenel coldly brushed her hand away. Caught off guard by this unexpected retaliation, Serina looked flustered before quickly twisting her face into a scowl.
“You—”
“Don’t touch me without permission. It’s disgusting.”
“What did you say?”
Serina couldn’t believe her ears at Ivenel’s icy remark. Hadn’t this girl always kept her head bowed meekly, silently accepting whatever she said?
Ivenel brushed her shoulder where Serina had touched it, as if shaking off something filthy. She’d intended to ignore it quietly, but after hearing those words, she simply couldn’t.
“Have you gone mad? Or have you gotten even dumber?”
“You’re the dumb one. You’d better think carefully yourself.”
“What are you—”
Her voice dropped noticeably lower than before, matching her souring mood, as she took a step toward Serina.
“If I really lose my mind and happen to run away, who do you think they’ll send to Caries instead?”
“Well…”
“The Imperial Court would hold someone from House Istella accountable and send another in your place. Naturally, that would be you.”
Ivenel had resolved to do nothing, but that didn’t mean she’d tolerate such provocation. Since she’d be leaving soon anyway, she had nothing to lose.
“If you can’t handle it, just keep your mouth shut and stay still. Unless you’d rather end up with only your head returning here.”
Serina’s breath caught in her throat as if the air around her had vanished, seeing Ivenel’s usually dull red eyes flash crimson like blood.
Was this how prey felt standing before a predator?
“And don’t call me ‘older sister’ again. You’re neither my younger sister nor anything else to me.”
That title belonged solely to Aran, and she never wanted to hear it from anyone else’s lips.
Leaving Serina frozen behind her, Ivenel turned away without hesitation and walked off. Only after Ivenel had completely disappeared did Serina finally exhale the breath she’d been holding.
“What…?”
She didn’t want to admit she’d been frightened by the insignificant Ivenel, yet she lacked the courage to meet those eyes again.
‘No, this isn’t the time for that.’
Serina hurried toward the main building to tell her father to place Ivenel’s residence under strict surveillance, just in case.
[This is the timeline separator]Ivenel finished recalling the incident at Duke Istella’s estate and slowly opened her eyes. She shook her head lightly and straightened her posture.
The air grew noticeably colder as they traveled northward, a chill she could feel on her skin. Even the scenery flashing past the window had taken on a completely different atmosphere.
“We’ll arrive at the Imperial Palace shortly.”
Lia, growing restless at Ivenel’s silence even after the knight’s announcement, finally made up her mind and called out.
“Lady Ivenel.”
At the call, Ivenel looked across at her with eyes that plainly asked, “Why did you call me?”
“Please don’t worry too much. I’m right here with you. No matter what happens, I’ll protect you.”
Since awakening in this body, Ivenel had been left with one unresolved question.
Everyone else went out of their way to avoid any connection with her—so why did this girl before her follow her so devotedly?
There was nothing to gain from currying favor with her.
“Why are you being so kind to me? Because of me, you’ve come all this way.”
“There’s no reason. It’s simply because you’re you.”
“But others don’t think that way, do they?”
“What others say doesn’t matter.”
For a moment, Lia’s trusting eyes overlapped again with Aran’s in Ivenel’s mind—her younger sister had always looked at her with that same gaze.
Every time she saw Aran in Lia, Ivenel couldn’t bear to meet her eyes directly. The lingering guilt tightened around her throat like a noose.
‘Anyway, it’s not me who needs to hear those words.’
She wasn’t truly Ivenel to begin with, and with the end drawing near, she had no desire to form a deep bond of trust with Lia.
Not even for Lia’s own sake.
Soon, their carriage slowed to a stop, signaling their arrival. Voices of the escort knights conversing with someone filtered in through the window.

“This is the carriage carrying Princess Ivenel Istella.”
“No one except Lady Ivenel may enter the Imperial Palace.”
At the firm declaration, Ivenel obediently stepped out of the carriage. Immediately, an endless wall and a gate marking the entrance filled her vision.
She couldn’t even guess what lay beyond that gate.
Lia, following Ivenel out of the carriage, quickly draped a coat over her shoulders.
“It’s chillier in Caries than in Aodin, my lady.”
But Ivenel’s gaze remained fixed on the knights guarding the palace entrance. Their uniforms were completely different from the ones she’d seen only once before at the duke’s estate.
What caught her eye next was the revolver holstered at their waists alongside their swords. Though only the end was visible, she recognized it as the same type she’d seen in Aodin.
At that moment, her eyes met those of a Caries knight standing guard at the entrance.
Ivenel instantly sensed it—their eyes brimmed with contempt.
The open display of that emotion made it clear they hadn’t even tried to hide it.
Amid the overwhelming aura of scorn emanating from them, Aran’s words flashed through her mind.
“Merely being from Aodin is a crime in Caries.”
Standing now on the soil of the Caries Empire, Ivenel finally understood the meaning behind those words. Here, her very existence was a sin deserving death.
Yet that fact hardly troubled her. Whether goodwill or hostility, neither held the slightest meaning for her.
Thus, she could calmly address her companions who had accompanied her this far.
“Since only I may enter, everyone else should turn back now. You too, Lia.”
“No.”
Unlike the escort knights, who clearly wanted to leave as soon as possible, Lia firmly refused. She then earnestly pleaded with the Caries knights.
“I’m Lady Ivenel’s maid. Please let me enter as well.”
“Impossible. Only Lady Ivenel may enter the Imperial Palace.”
“I beg you, please allow it.”
Even as she bowed deeply, the two knights only repeated their refusal.
Just as Ivenel was about to tell Lia it was right to part ways here, the palace gates began to open slowly.
The knights guarding the entrance immediately lowered their heads as a man emerged from within.
‘Who is he?’
With his deep auburn hair, violet eyes, imposing build, and a scar running across his left eye, the man was so intimidating that merely looking at him felt burdensome.
Ivenel’s gaze lingered on the insignia adorning his left chest.
Two crossed swords and a mysterious purple serpent emblem.
Everything about him signaled he was no ordinary person.
After scanning the group, the man finally turned his eyes to Ivenel and spoke.
“I am Demil, Captain of the Knights.”
After this brief introduction, Demil immediately asked the knights,
“What’s going on? Why haven’t you opened the gate?”
“This maid insists on entering, despite our refusal.”
He glanced briefly at Lia, then fixed his gaze on Ivenel and spoke in a voice devoid of emotion.
“Follow me.”
Realizing belatedly that this was permission, Lia couldn’t hide her joy as she quickly gathered her belongings.
The two stepped through the entrance into the Imperial Palace behind Demil. The gate closed firmly behind them, as if declaring they’d never leave alive.
“This is the Imperial Palace…”
Before Ivenel stretched a vast palace grounds, incomparable even to the duke’s estate where she’d previously stayed.
It was so immense it might as well have been another city beyond the gate, its boundaries lost to sight.
An overwhelming sense of grandeur and weight pressed down on everything.
“Wow… It feels completely different from Aodin, my lady.”
Lia, visiting the Caries Empire for the first time, kept turning her head to take in the surroundings. Yet despite the spectacle around her, Ivenel kept her eyes fixed solely on Demil walking ahead.
“Are we heading to the palace where His Imperial Majesty resides?”
Lia’s hopeful assumption would soon prove wrong as they gradually moved toward the palace’s more remote areas.
This was certainly no place fit for an emperor ruling an entire empire.
Before long, the surrounding buildings disappeared, and they passed down a shaded path lined with trees until a solitary structure loomed into view at its end.
Ivenel halted her steps behind Demil and looked up at their destination.

It was a circular building with an open roof, resembling a colosseum. The sheer presence of such a massive arena-like structure within the Imperial Palace was astonishing.
And the fact they’d brought her here meant—
‘I expected it, but so soon after arrival?’
She sensed the events from the novel were about to unfold. Having already made her decision, her mind remained as calm as the surface of a still lake.
She’d assumed being thrown as monster fodder wouldn’t happen in an ordinary place—but she never imagined it would be here.
“So this is it.”
At Ivenel’s composed words, Demil’s gaze turned toward her. Her eyes, fixed on the arena, showed not the slightest hint of surprise.
‘Why doesn’t she ask anything?’
In truth, he’d been watching Ivenel closely since their first meeting—her reactions continually defied his expectations.
She never asked where they were going, maintaining silence the whole way, her expression blank, showing neither fear nor curiosity.
But Demil’s thoughts went no further. He merely had to carry out his lord’s orders.
“This is the place. Someone is waiting inside.”
Ivenel obediently followed him into the building. After passing through a dark corridor, they reached an iron door from which light seeped through.
Demil opened the door, gesturing for her to enter. Before stepping through, Ivenel turned to Lia standing behind her and gave her final instructions.
“Lia, don’t follow me. Stay here.”
“My lady…”
Lia’s face betrayed a trace of anxiety—she had no idea where they were or what was about to happen.
“And if anything happens to me, you must return immediately to Aodin. Don’t look back.”
She doubted they’d harm the innocent girl, but it wouldn’t hurt to be absolutely clear.
“What do you mean by that…”
Leaving Lia grasping at her, Ivenel slowly stepped forward as if drawn into the bright light.
The sunlight was so blinding she raised her hand to shield her eyes as she walked toward the center.
By the time her eyes adjusted to the light and she lowered her hand, a thunderous roar of voices filled the space before she could even grasp her surroundings.
