“I’m not sure how best to put it into words.”

I had to reply somehow, but I was painfully aware of this man sitting right next to me, his eyes fixed on me.

All I could see was his face completely filling my field of vision, and because of that, instead of saying what I actually wanted to say, my words kept circling around it without ever landing directly on it.

I would explain things carefully, step by step, like climbing a low staircase one step at a time. But the moment I took that first step in a direction he didn’t like, I knew all too well he would instantly put on a deeply disappointed expression.

And I didn’t want to see that look on his face.

“To be honest… I was excited.”

I just blurted it out—the real way I felt. Jun’s gaze, which had been locked onto me, briefly floated away into the air before softly landing on the profile photo sitting on his desk. He gave a small nod and kept twirling his pen absentmindedly.

My heart grew impatient.

“When you spoke, Ji Hoon, it felt like you were repeating the exact words Jun said to me nine years ago. Over your face, I could see the clear, bright eyes of that younger Jun. I’d thought that version of him—so deeply buried in my memories—was lost forever, but somehow, seeing something so close to it again… That’s why I felt excited.”

Jun’s hand, which had been steadily spinning his pen, suddenly stopped moving. Still showing me only his profile, he finally brushed his lips with the back of his hand, seemingly embarrassed.

Maybe he was trying to hide the corners of his mouth, which were threatening to curl upward into a smile before he could stop them.

“So you’re saying you felt immersed.”

PD Kang summed up my swelling, fluttering emotions—stirred by Ji Hoon’s performance—in just three syllables: “immersed.” It wasn’t quite the same, though.

Then Jun quietly added,

“Hearing you say you were excited… I actually feel a little jealous of twenty-year-old Jun.”
