After slipping away from the meeting place and getting into the car, Seo Yeon rested her forehead on the steering wheel.

Whether blood was shared or not, they were still family to her. Yet Ae Sook, who worried solely about Ye Rin’s well-being and even threatened her own life, no longer saw Seo Yeon as her daughter.

Though she had resolved not to harbor foolish hopes anymore, she felt utterly pathetic—still wounded and despairing over Ae Sook’s indifference.

First and foremost, she wanted to leave this place.

If she lingered here any longer, she feared she would suffocate on the spot. Lifting her face from the steering wheel, Seo Yeon started the car. After driving for a long while, she stopped in a quiet, sparsely populated residential area.

She needed time alone—until she felt better, or until she could wear an expression completely unaffected.

“…What am I even doing right now?”

Seo Yeon muttered listlessly. When would she finally escape this crushing despair? She felt as if she were sinking into a deep, bottomless swamp, relentlessly pulling her in.

Just as Seo Yeon was battling her dark emotions, the sound of her phone ringing broke the silence inside the car.

She checked the caller’s name—it was her husband. When had he ever sent this many messages?

Expecting no more than one or two texts, Seo Yeon was slightly flustered as she lifted her head and began reading through the flood of messages.

—I’ve recently quit smoking.

At first, she couldn’t understand why he was suddenly saying this. Still, pleased by his effort to quit, she read on.

—I’m trying to eat only healthy food.

—I make sure to exercise regularly, no matter how tired I am. Though I don’t sleep well due to being busy.
