Your Former Wife (Completed Main Story) - Chapter 13
“You want to stay together?”
Sung Jun locked eyes with Seo Yeon.
Her half-closed eyelids slowly lifted at the sound of his voice. Upon recognizing its source, her mouth parted slightly in surprise. After a brief moment of startled expression, Seo Yeon began studying him intently.
Her steady, piercing gaze felt oddly persistent—somewhere unsettling yet impossible to ignore. After a pause, as if only now recalling his question, she nodded and replied:
“Yes. That’s right. I want to stay together.”
It had been an incredibly long time since he’d seen that look in his wife’s eyes—the same expression she used to wear during their pre-marriage dates.
Her almond-shaped, deep chestnut irises—and even her long eyelashes—remained exactly as he remembered: profound and beautiful. Keeping his gaze fixed upon her eyes, Sung Jun spoke again:
“But you always seem uncomfortable being around me, don’t you?”
Seo Yeon answered,
“…It *is* uncomfortable, true.”
Sung Jun let out a weak, hollow laugh.
At least she didn’t deny it.
He’d suspected as much, but hearing it straight from her felt bitter—like the taste of regret coating his tongue.
For some time now, whenever Seo Yeon saw him, she acted as though she’d just seen a ghost. He’d tried speaking to her, making efforts to reconnect, but constantly chasing after a woman who avoided him like he was a criminal grew exhausting and tiresome—even if she *was* stunningly beautiful, even if she *was* the wife he himself had chosen. And it was even harder during those moments when he knew the entire situation had stemmed from his own mistakes and he was forced to patch things up constantly.
“But… not anymore?” he asked, genuinely curious.
“…I’m still uncomfortable now.”
Her reply defied his expectations, leaving him frustrated and deflated.
“Then why? What about me makes you so uncomfortable?”
“…”
Seo Yeon hesitated, scanning his expression as if unsure whether she was even allowed to answer. Her hesitation, however, was brief. After a moment, she delivered a response he never could have anticipated:
“…Everything.”
Apparently, this infuriating woman was determined to test his patience today.
*Everything?*
The word struck him like a hard blow to the back of his head—leaving him momentarily dazed.
He’d expected her to mention a few flaws at most and leave it at that, but instead she spat out *everything*, as if mocking his assumptions.
*Me? What about me could possibly be that bad?*
And just like that, he’d become—in his wife’s eyes—a man whose every trait was unbearable. The more he thought about it, the more unjust and resentful he felt.
“Then *why* do you want to stay together with a man who’s so utterly unbearable to you, Han Seo Yeon?”
Once his mood soured, his tone inevitably followed. A voice in his head warned him this was petulant and childish, yet he couldn’t rein in his spiteful impulse.
“You should’ve kept avoiding me like before. Why not?”
“…”
“Still hesitating? Can’t even give a straight answer? Just hang your head in frustration like always—and keep making every excuse in the book to dodge me, right?”
“…”
“You’re *so* good at that, after all.”
At that, Seo Yeon’s face crumpled into a pout—on the verge of tears.
The man who’d just criticized her looked utterly bewildered, as if he hadn’t seen this coming at all.
His heart lurched. *Is she about to cry?* If she really did, he feared he’d never forgive himself for how he’d acted today. Just then—
“Why do you always talk to me like such a jerk?”
“…!”
Suddenly, Seo Yeon’s voice trembled with emotion as she burst out, no longer trying to hide what she felt:
“It’s *because* you talk to me like a jerk that I avoid you!”
“…”
“I’m always doing the best I can within my limits. So why do you keep scolding me the moment you see me every day? Is it *all* my fault?”
“…”
“I only acted that way because I had no other choice… Because I genuinely couldn’t see any other way…”
Sung Jun’s eyes wavered, visibly shaken. At his reaction, Seo Yeon’s composure cracked further, and she lashed out pointedly, as if she’d made up her mind:
“You’re terrible. Truly.”
At her words, Sung Jun’s normally composed brow furrowed again, creasing deeply.
“…”
Throughout their marriage, Seo Yeon had *never* once voiced her feelings or openly blamed anyone—not even him.
Trending
Hearing her directly criticize him, express anger, and lay bare her emotions left him first stunned, then intensely curious to understand *her* deeper thoughts, and finally—surprisingly—calm and clear-headed.
By then, all traces of bewilderment had vanished from Sung Jun’s face.
After silently observing her for a while, he suddenly lowered his posture to meet her gaze directly and asked, earnestly:
“If I stop talking like a jerk… will you stop avoiding me?”
“…!”
“Hmm? Han Seo Yeon. So—will you *really* stop avoiding me, then?”
As he spoke, he took one more step closer—almost as if longing to reach out and touch her. At that subtle movement, Seo Yeon’s eyes flickered faintly, and the tremor quickly spread through her whole body.
“…!”
Just moments before, her mind had been hazy, as if she were lost inside a dream—but the instant she met his jet-black eyes, piercing and fully present, her thoughts snapped into sudden, painful clarity.
This moment was *real*. The man before her was neither a dream nor an illusion.
“I…—”
Just as a flustered Seo Yeon took a step back, the silence shattered with the ring of a phone. Seizing the chance, she blurted out hastily:
“I—I’ll head to bed first.”
Then she spun around and fled the room without looking back—though she could *feel* those dark eyes following her all the same.
*
Seo Yeon pressed a hand to her forehead, frowning deeply.
“Why did I get drunk so quickly?”
She knew full well a few glasses of wine couldn’t possibly intoxicate her. In fact, she usually stayed *too* sober—even after drinking—so much so it often caused problems. Even though she’d downed five glasses in rapid succession, this level of drunkenness still made no sense.
“Ah…”
Then it dawned on her: the period when she’d wandered aimlessly, drinking heavily and steadily increasing her tolerance, hadn’t happened *yet*.
She hadn’t yet spent a night with her husband passed out drunk, nor had the child who would one day abruptly appear and upend her entire life come into her world.
Thus, she hadn’t yet turned to alcohol to numb emotional pain—and the husband who’d grown daily disillusioned and furious with *that* version of her simply didn’t exist *here*, in this past.
Logically, it was obvious—but to Seo Yeon, that distant future felt as fresh and vivid as last night, so much closer to reality that she’d completely forgotten this truth.
“Haah…”
With a long, weary sigh, Seo Yeon sank limply onto her bed. After a pause, worry crept across her face as she cradled her head in her hands.
She’d invited her husband to dinner today because his chillingly cold expression—after she’d offered to draft the agreement—had unsettled her deeply. She’d wanted, *desperately*, to correct yesterday’s mistake.
Her plan had been to set a pleasant mood, bring up their estrangement, and gently ask him to please consider having a child more positively. But instead…
“…He’ll probably think I’m even weirder now.”
Even before marriage, Seo Yeon had always smiled whenever she saw children walking down the street—unable to tear her eyes away until they disappeared from view. To her, children were beings whose very existence radiated loveliness and endlessly brightened her mood. She’d assumed this was an instinctive, universal feeling shared by all people.
But not her husband.
He’d always watched her, fascinated yet perplexed, whenever she fixated on a child. And when relatives pressured them about having kids, he’d flatly shut them down, declaring he had no such plans—ever.
His reason? He claimed he had no time to spare for children. Called it a waste of time. So when she’d finally confessed her pregnancy, Seo Yeon had been even more terrified.
Fortunately, contrary to her fears, Sung Jun hadn’t rejected the child or called it a mistake.
Instead, he’d stunned her daily with behavior radically different from his former self.
Yet Seo Yeon still couldn’t shake her anxiety.
How could a husband—whose wife had voluntarily moved into a separate room—possibly accept her sudden request to cooperate in having a child?
She recalled Sung Jun’s face, serious and sincere, as he’d asked if she’d stop avoiding him provided he spoke kindly.
Those dark eyes, wholly focused on *her alone*, had made her wonder—almost delude herself—whether he, too, had been waiting for a chance to draw closer, just as she had.
“That’s absurd.”
Seo Yeon shot up from her seat, horrified by the thought forming in her head.
*How could I possibly misunderstand things like that?*
The suspicion that her own hope might be distorting reality chilled her inwardly.
It wasn’t as if she’d been unaware of her husband’s affair—and yet, *knowing* the truth from the start, how could she—*still*—entertain such expectations? It felt as if her past self were coldly mocking her present one.
Even now, her phone remained filled with messages from *that* woman—the one her husband called his.
“How pathetic.”
After wallowing in self-loathing for a while, murmuring dejectedly to herself, Seo Yeon snapped back to reality—and lightly slapped both cheeks as if to jolt herself awake.
Brooding over unchangeable reality was a luxury she couldn’t afford. Right now, she needed to focus solely on the parts she *could* change. With that resolve, her eyes gleamed once more.

Mini scene 1:
One day, the sun is high in the sky but Su Qingwan still hasn’t gotten up for class.
Servant Xiaoyuan: “Young prince, it’s time for class. You’ll be late otherwise.”
Su Qingwan says arrogantly: “I’m not going. I am the esteemed prince, my status is so noble, why should I suffer this hardship? Besides, isn’t learning all this just to please women? Hmph, they’re not worthy!”
Mini scene 2:
After Su Qingwan falls for someone, he completely changes. He no longer skips class and diligently learns how to be a good husband and father. But he discovers that Sister Yuner is always surrounded by admirers.
Drunk and overcome with jealousy one day, he clings to Lu Yuner, crying beautifully like a pear blossom in the rain.
Su Qingwan: “Qingwan likes Sister Yuner.”
Lu Yuner: “Young prince, you’re drunk.”
Su Qingwan: “Qingwan isn’t drunk. Qingwan likes Sister Yuner, likes you so much, likes you to bits…” Before he can finish, Lu Yuner’s eyes flash with emotion and she leans in closer.
