Younger Man at Work (Completed Main Story) - Chapter 4
‘Could that man possibly be the landlord?’
She realized her thought—formed the moment she saw the man who had unexpectedly shown up at her home—was correct during the final interview at the company she’d applied to that year-end.
There he was, seated among the interview panel, with a name tag that read, “CEO Kwon Seung Joo”—the exact same name written on Eun Seo’s lease agreement.
He had a face so memorable it was impossible to forget after just one glance. So Eun Seo recognized him immediately, but he didn’t seem to recognize her at all—not during the interview, nor even after she passed and joined the company.
No matter how little interaction there might typically be between a CEO and an ordinary employee, they worked in the same building—there was no way they hadn’t crossed paths at least once over two years. In fact, they’d bumped into each other several times, and even shared the elevator alone—without his secretary—three separate occasions.
Each time they were alone together, their exchange was identical, as if rehearsed:
[Hello, CEO.] [Thank you for your hard work.]Not a trace remained of that night’s fragile, precarious expression, as if it might collapse at any moment. He was the kind of person who seemed so impenetrable you couldn’t even stick a needle into him—let alone draw a single drop of blood. That was CEO Kwon Seung Joo.
So Eun Seo figured he probably didn’t recognize her. After all, he’d been drunk back then.
If the other person didn’t remember, there was no reason to force an acknowledgment. Nor did she have any obligation to announce, “I’m your tenant.”
Thus, aside from the quiet fondness Eun Seo had secretly harbored from afar, their relationship was strictly that of CEO and junior employee—or landlord and tenant. Nothing more.
‘But then… why?’
Staring at the man lying motionless on the hospital bed, Eun Seo’s mind grew tangled.
Kwon Seung Joo had clearly realized the car was veering onto the sidewalk in time to avoid it. He’d had ample opportunity to get out of the way—yet instead of leaping to safety himself, he’d shoved Eun Seo aside and taken the full impact alone.
Fortunately, someone passing by must have called for help right away. An ambulance arrived shortly after, and Kwon Seung Joo was rushed to the nearest hospital. Eun Seo had followed along in a daze.
The one stroke of luck in this misfortune was that the spot where he’d been thrown after the collision happened to be a pile of fallen leaves the street cleaners had gathered by the curb. Although his bruises were severe, thankfully not a single bone was broken.
While the unconscious Kwon Seung Joo received medical attention, Eun Seo explained everything she’d witnessed in as much detail as possible to the police who arrived at the hospital. According to them, the driver was already under investigation at the station, claiming sudden unintended acceleration.
She ought to have contacted his family—but she had no idea how to reach them. With no other choice, Eun Seo sifted through the company messaging app and called his secretary. She felt awkward calling on a holiday using a personal mobile number, but given the circumstances, it was unavoidable.
“This is Yoon Eun Seo from Planning. The CEO has been in a traffic accident.”
Within moments, the secretary—now pale as a ghost—came rushing to the hospital in a panic. Eun Seo then gave her another thorough account of the incident.
She explained she’d stopped by the office briefly on the weekend for work, saw the CEO standing by the roadside, went to greet him—and witnessed the accident.
“Understood.”
Yet, she couldn’t bring herself to say the one crucial detail: that he’d pushed her away and taken the hit alone. Even if she did say it, she doubted anyone would believe her.
*
She’d merely happened to be standing beside him at the moment of impact—Eun Seo wasn’t Kwon Seung Joo’s family, friend, or anything else. Now that his secretary had arrived, she had no reason to stay any longer. After giving her statement as a witness, she headed straight home.
By the time she got back, it was already deep into the night—but her thoughts swirled endlessly, making sleep impossible. Her mind kept circling the same question: Why on earth had he done that?
‘Could he have felt guilty toward me?’
Eun Seo quickly shook her head. Someone feeling guilty wouldn’t do something like that.
No matter how she thought about it, there was no way Kwon Seung Joo harbored any goodwill toward her—certainly not enough to risk his own life.
After much deliberation, she concluded it must have been a purely reflexive reaction in a moment of panic. Would he have acted the same way even if it had been someone else standing beside him?
‘If he reacted that way instinctively… does that mean he isn’t truly such a terrible person after all…?’
As soon as the thought crossed her mind, Kwon Seung Joo’s icy voice replayed in her ears:
[You’d be dead.]Ugh, I give up. Eun Seo pulled the blanket over her head.
*
Regardless of his motives, the fact remained: she owed Kwon Seung Joo a debt of gratitude. If he’d simply dodged the car by himself, it would have been Eun Seo lying in the hospital bed right now.
The next day was Monday. Unable to simply pretend nothing happened, Eun Seo bought a carton of juice early that morning and headed to the hospital—intending to pay a brief visit before work.
[Are you even human?]She’d been fretting all the way there over how to greet someone who’d shouted at her like that just yesterday—but when she arrived, she learned he still hadn’t regained consciousness.
“What? He hasn’t woken up yet?”
The secretary nodded grimly.
“But they said he only had bruises and nothing seriously injured, right?”
“That’s correct. His brain waves are normal, so the doctors say he’s just in a deep sleep…”
The accident had happened yesterday afternoon. Kwon Seung Joo was famously rumored to sleep only four hours a day. It didn’t make sense for him to remain unconscious this long if it were just ordinary sleep.
A sudden chill ran down Eun Seo’s spine. What if he ended up in a vegetative state…?!
As she stood there, frozen with worry, a frantic female voice rang out from somewhere nearby.
“Where’s my Seung Joo? Where is he?”
At the end of the corridor appeared a middle-aged woman, her face etched with anxiety, followed by several attendants.
Kwon Seung Joo’s secretary immediately rushed over and bowed deeply.
Trending
“Madam, you’ve arrived.”
Judging by the situation, this had to be Kwon Seung Joo’s mother—the Chairman’s wife—but she looked astonishingly young. Her long, straight hair gleamed past her collarbones, and her luminous skin showed not a single wrinkle. Her slender figure, draped in a simple, elegant dress, appeared almost delicate.
Unlike the chaebol madams Eun Seo had seen in dramas—usually heavy with makeup, fur coats, and flashy jewelry—this woman looked refreshingly plain, even pure. It was hard to believe she had a son in his early thirties.
‘Since I’m an employee of the group, should I go greet her?’
Before Eun Seo could decide, the madam ignored her completely and hurried straight into the hospital room.
“Seung Joo!”
Pushing aside the cluster of doctors and nurses around the bed, the woman grasped Kwon Seung Joo’s motionless hand and called out in a tearful, desperate voice:
“Seung Joo, it’s Mom. Open your eyes, okay?”
Even Eun Seo, watching from behind, felt her eyes unexpectedly well up at the raw ache in that voice.
In that instant—as if by magic—his long eyelashes fluttered.
“Seung Joo, are you coming to? Hm?”
Amid his mother’s tearful exclamation, his eyelids slowly, heavily lifted—inch by inch.
Every medical staff member held their breath as the man, finally opening his eyes with visible effort, murmured weakly:
“Mom…?”
The unconscious man had opened his eyes—as if answering his mother’s anguished call.
Tears shimmering, his mother clutched his hand tightly.
“Yes, Seung Joo. Mom’s right here. It’s all right now.”
Yet instead of relief, his eyes filled with wariness as he looked at her.
“Who are you, ajumma?”
Shock flashed across the Chairman’s wife’s beautiful face—but Kwon Seung Joo ignored her, turning his head to scan the room restlessly.
“Where’s my real mom? Didn’t you say she was coming?”
His mother asked urgently:
“Seung Joo, don’t you recognize me?”
The next moment, the man violently flung her hand away.
“Why would you be my mom?!”
She froze. The medical staff around them were utterly stunned.
“Where’s my mom? Where is she?!”
Furious, he began thrashing wildly—so much so that he tried to leap out of bed, causing the nurses to scramble to hold his large frame down.
“Administer sedatives! Now!”
Eun Seo quietly slipped out of the room during the commotion.
‘What did I just witness?’
Her heart pounded as if she’d accidentally glimpsed some hidden truth of the chaebol family.
She’d vaguely heard rumors that Kwon Seung Joo’s mother was actually his stepmother—but she never imagined he’d shout outright, “Why would you be my mom?!”
‘Still… she did seem to care about him as if he were her own son.’
But now that she thought about it, something felt odd. The accident had happened yesterday—if she’d been so worried, why had she only arrived today? His secretary surely would’ve contacted her immediately.
‘Could what I just saw have all been an act?’
Yet the image of the madam clutching his hand, calling out “Seung Joo” with such heartbreaking sincerity, made that idea feel impossible.
‘Ah, maybe she was just far away—maybe even overseas.’
It was rude to speculate so much about someone else’s family affairs. Eun Seo decided to drop the matter and headed off to work.

In situations like this, asking an expert was the fastest solution. After lunch, Eun Seo casually led Seon Ah into the break room, handed her a can of coffee, and asked quietly:
“Hey, Seon Ah. You know that madam—the Chairman’s wife, our CEO’s mom?”
“Mom, what are you talking about?”
Seon Ah immediately pursed her lips in distaste.
“She’s his stepmother, right? Did his real mom pass away?”
“What? You don’t know this, Eun Seo?”
Seon Ah stared at her incredulously.
“Didn’t you hear about that huge scandal when we were kids—the chaebol madam’s disappearance case?!”
When the male lead is punished by carrying the female lead’s child and having periods like a woman
“I’ve given birth to two children for you, yet you still think about him.
Was I nothing but his substitute to you from beginning to end?”
