Younger Man at Work (Completed Main Story) - Chapter 3
Days passed lifelessly. She thought she should start looking for a new place to move, but she had no motivation for anything at all.
Meanwhile, the real estate agent called once more.
“The landlord would like to conduct a safety inspection in advance. Is that alright with you?”
It was a polite request.
Eun Seo inwardly scoffed. Why bother with a safety inspection on a house that’s going to be demolished anyway? Truthfully, she didn’t want to allow it, but she didn’t wish to act like a troublesome tenant either, so she told them to come while she was at work—and apparently, they’d already come and gone.
Even on the weekend, her energy hadn’t returned. Avoiding the chore of handing out flyers, she lazed around on the warm ondol floor until nearly lunchtime, when suddenly the doorbell rang.
There was certainly no intercom in such an old house. Eun Seo slowly got up and walked out to the yard.
“Who is it?”
“I’ve come on behalf of the landlord.”
When she opened the gate, a man in a black suit handed her a business card from his pocket. It was from Dae Won Construction—the same company Eun Seo worked for—and listed him as a lawyer from the legal team.
Couldn’t they have just told her through the real estate agent? Did they really have to double-confirm like this? Fuming, she couldn’t help but retort sarcastically.
“Please tell the landlord not to worry—I’ll vacate the place precisely the moment my lease ends.”
But what came out of the lawyer’s mouth was utterly shocking.
“We’re starting demolition in two weeks, so I came to inform you to move out before then.”
Eun Seo couldn’t believe her ears.
“What do you mean? My lease still has nearly three months left! You clearly said demolition wouldn’t begin until after the lease expired.”
“The safety inspection revealed several serious issues. The building lacks fire safety equipment, there are cracks in the load-bearing walls, and the pillars supporting the roof are so deteriorated they could collapse at any moment…”
The lawyer went on at length about the house’s condition, but only one phrase stuck in Eun Seo’s mind:
Demolition in two weeks.
“Therefore, construction will begin earlier than scheduled. We kindly ask for your understanding that this is a precautionary measure taken solely out of concern for the tenant’s safety.”
“No! Regardless, legally, this is still my home until the lease ends. You can’t just demolish it whenever you please!”
When she mentioned the law, the lawyer adjusted his glasses and replied,
“If you wish to contest this, you’re free to file a lawsuit against the landlord.”
His tone was polite but his meaning was clear: Go ahead and try if you dare. He plainly saw right through her—that Eun Seo would never actually sue.
The fact that this was true only made her feel more miserable and angry. She lacked both the nerve to sue her own company’s CEO and the money to afford legal fees. Even worms thrash when stepped on—yet here she was, being trampled on so openly and mockingly, and she couldn’t do a thing.
“If you agree to the earlier demolition, we’ve been instructed to negotiate relocation compensation as favorably as possible for you, according to your wishes…”
That damn money! Eun Seo couldn’t hold back anymore and shouted,
“Who asked you for money!”
People say: “If you can’t give charity, at least don’t break the beggar’s bowl.” She had laid bare her deepest circumstances and pleaded earnestly—and instead of granting her request, they moved up the demolition!
How could someone do this? After a moment of trembling with shock, Eun Seo went back inside. She hastily threw on an outer coat, grabbed her wallet, and rushed out again.
“Ms. Yoon Eun Seo? Where are you going?”
Ignoring the bewildered lawyer, she stormed out of the house and frantically hailed a taxi. If she didn’t confront that utterly inhuman man face-to-face right now, she felt her chest would burst open and kill her.
It was Saturday, but Eun Seo didn’t hesitate—Kwon Seung Joo was famously known to come into the office even on holidays.
“To the Dae Won Construction headquarters.”
In the taxi, Eun Seo clenched her fists so tightly her fingernails dug into her palms. She was furious—at that cruel man, and even more so at her own foolishness for ever begging him for sympathy.
Of course, once the lease ended, the landlord was free to demolish the house. She had asked him to extend it for just one more year—but he had no obligation to agree. If he did, she’d be grateful; if not, there was nothing she could do.
But forcing her out before the lease even ended was a different matter entirely. Saying “Go ahead and sue if you want” was nothing but outright mockery.
“Why? What exactly did I do?”
No matter how hard she thought, she couldn’t recall having wronged him in any way. If anything, she’d shown him kindness. So why was he going out of his way to be so cruel?
Eun Seo recalled the day she first met him, two years ago.
*
It had also been autumn—a drizzly night.
Back then, Eun Seo was juggling part-time work and job hunting. Around nine in the evening, after finishing her shift and returning home, she found a strange man sitting right on her porch.
‘Eun Ho?’
Her heart fluttered with hope for just a moment—until she saw his face and was quickly disappointed.
Dressed as though he’d just come from a funeral—black suit, black tie, and a dark overcoat—the man looked to be late twenties at least. Eun Ho wasn’t even twenty yet.
Realizing this man wasn’t her brother, she suddenly felt afraid.
She regretted having ignored the broken gate lock for over a week, using “too busy” and “no money” as excuses. She’d foolishly thought, “There’s nothing worth stealing here anyway.”
“…”
The man, who seemed lost in thought, slowly raised his eyes and looked at Eun Seo. The moment their gazes met, her heart dropped. Should she scream? Call the police? While she hesitated, the man slowly stood up.

“I’m sorry for entering without permission.”
The unusually tall man bowed deeply toward Eun Seo.
“I used to live here briefly a long time ago. I came back on a whim, and the gate was open.”
“…”
“If you allow it, I’d just like to sit here a little while longer before leaving.”
It was already nighttime, and she lived alone as a woman. Of course, she should’ve refused.
But the words wouldn’t come out—because the man looked utterly fragile.
It was hard to explain, but his face seemed like it might crumble at the slightest touch. Despite his tall, sturdy build, somehow he gave off that impression.
Without even realizing it, Eun Seo found herself speaking to a man caught red-handed trespassing.
“Then… make yourself comfortable and leave when you’re ready.”
The man bowed his head. “Thank you.”
‘What on earth did I just do?’
Muttering to herself, Eun Seo went back into her room.
Peeking through the door crack, she saw the man sitting perfectly still, gazing endlessly toward the gate.
Looking at his large, lonely back, she wondered—could he possibly be the landlord?
According to the old lease agreement, the landlord was a young man, about six or seven years older than her. The man outside looked exactly that age.
Though she didn’t sense any threat from him, having a stranger in her yard still unnerved her, and she couldn’t sleep properly that night.
She kept drifting in and out of restless sleep until 2:30 a.m., when her alarm went off. It was time to deliver newspapers. The pay wasn’t high, but since middle school she’d done it regularly—it allowed her to distribute flyers searching for her younger brother while earning some money at the same time.
The late-autumn dawn air, after the rain, was as cold as midwinter.
‘He’s probably gone by now.’
Thinking that, she bundled up tightly in her puffer jacket and scarf—only to nearly scream when she saw someone collapsed on the porch.
“U-um… are you okay?”
Terrified, she crept closer and asked softly. Instead of a reply, she heard steady, deep breathing.
“…”
She sighed in relief. Oh, he was just asleep. Only then did she notice the faint smell of alcohol—he was drunk, though he showed no outward signs earlier.
Up close, he was shockingly handsome. He was right in front of her, yet it felt like watching a movie or TV—because she’d never seen someone this good-looking in real life before.
Eun Seo had never even had a crush, let alone dated anyone. This was the first time she’d seen a man’s face this close.
‘His eyelashes are incredibly long.’
With his strong build, dark eyebrows, sharp nose, and defined jawline—every feature was strikingly masculine—yet his overall aura wasn’t harsh but rather refined. Strangely, she didn’t get tired of looking at him.
“…”
She completely forgot about her newspaper delivery and stood there, transfixed by the sleeping man’s face.
Suddenly, he shifted violently in his sleep, startling Eun Seo so badly she jumped backward. Realizing what she’d been doing, her face flushed hotly.
“…Hmm.”
Even in his sleep, he shivered from the cold and curled up tightly. Of course—he was wearing only a thin autumn coat, sleeping outside in this freezing dawn.
‘What if he freezes to death?’
She didn’t know what to do. She wanted to at least move him inside behind the glass-paneled veranda, but the man was easily twice her size—there was no way she could carry him.
“Hey… you’ll get a stiff neck sleeping out here like this…”
She timidly tried shaking him by the shoulder, but he didn’t budge—he was too drunk.
Finally, she brought out a thick blanket and draped it over him. Still worried, she brought out an electric heater and turned it on. Thinking he’d have an upset stomach when he woke up, she also prepared a thermos of warm honey tea before leaving.
‘Will he be alright?’
That whole morning, while delivering newspapers, Eun Seo’s mind was filled with thoughts of that nameless man.
What connection could he possibly have with my house?
Could he really be the landlord?
Why did he stare so sadly and endlessly at the gate…?
When she returned after finishing her morning deliveries, the man was gone—only the neatly folded blanket and an empty thermos remained.
*
If it hadn’t been for that brief encounter two years ago, she wouldn’t be this furious now.
It seemed even the goddess of vengeance sided with her. The moment she stepped out of the taxi, Kwon Seung Joo appeared right before her eyes—as if by some miracle.
Why was he standing alone on the street in front of the company building without even a secretary? He was looking in the direction from which cars approached—likely waiting for someone.
Even on a weekend, Kwon Seung Joo wore a suit, a trench coat, and a neatly knotted tie. Standing motionless amidst the scattered autumn leaves, he looked like a scene straight out of a fall-themed photo spread.

Of course, all Eun Seo could think was how badly she wanted to wrap that necktie tightly around his throat.
“Are you even human?”
She marched up and demanded without preamble. Kwon Seung Joo flinched and turned to look at her.
“How—how can a person do something like this?”
She’d planned to scream at him, but instead, her voice came out pitifully shaky—shamefully so, even to her own ears.
Kwon Seung Joo let out an openly annoyed sigh, as if bothered.
“What now?”
“You deliberately moved up the demolition!”
It was still company premises, even if it was a holiday. Anyone seeing this might faint from shock—but Eun Seo’s vision was already red with rage. She no longer cared that he was her company’s CEO. Let him fire her if he wanted.
Unlike Eun Seo, who was seething with fury, the man remained perfectly calm.
“Hope is the worst of evils—it prolongs human suffering.”
“…?”
“It’s a quote from Nietzsche. With something hopeless, it’s better to let go your heart as soon as possible, even by a single day…”
Nothing in the world was more repulsive than this privileged-looking man spouting lofty words with his handsome face.
“Why do you get to decide that?”
Eun Seo glared straight into his eyes.
“Born as the eldest son of a chaebol, entering the company with a director title already attached—you must find everything in the world easy. Climbing to CEO in just four years, everyone else probably looks foolish and pathetic to you.”
She sneered at his slightly stunned expression.
“Someone like you has probably never felt real pain in your life. Never lost sleep from exhaustion, never cried desperately clutching your chest.”
“…”
“Let me give you one piece of advice: people like you shouldn’t give advice to others.”
She thought that would insult him enough. When had this man ever heard such words from someone like her—a mere tenant and ordinary employee, nothing more than a bug in his eyes?
She waited, almost with pleasure, to see humiliation flash across his flawless face.
Instead, Kwon Seung Joo responded by reaching out with both hands and shoving her—hard.
Caught completely off guard, Eun Seo tumbled helplessly onto the pavement.
Now he was even assaulting her!
Tears welled up from sheer disbelief and despair—when suddenly, an unthinkable scene entered her vision.
Kwon Seung Joo was struck by a car rushing toward him from somewhere.
His large body hit the vehicle and lifted into the air—the whole moment unfolding in slow motion before her eyes.
