Standing before the heavy iron door, he paused briefly to steady his breath. Otherwise, he knew he wouldn’t be able to control what he might do the moment he stepped inside.

After taking a few deep breaths, Calon pushed open the iron door. Creak. The heavy door groaned as it moved, and a gust of air from the chamber beyond rushed out.

The underground air was unnervingly cool and damp for summer, thick with the stench of blood.
