Two weeks after Elise returned, they came back riding not the Duke’s carriage but an old country cart.

With tousled hair and wrinkled clothes from the long carriage journey, they fumbled about gathering their belongings like defeated soldiers.

As soon as they got off the cart with Elise, they grabbed her and wailed loudly.

“Oh dear, what are we to do now!”

“The Grand Duke has been bewitched by that woman and abandoned us!”

Their faces and bodies bore marks of violence as they vented their outrage.

These were injuries sustained when they’d stubbornly held out in the annex, refusing to leave until the Grand Duke granted them the “proper compensation” of marriage, and were finally dragged out.

Before being dragged out, they’d shouted demands that the Grand Duke take responsibility and marry Elise, but afterward—realizing even themselves that such a thing was impossible—they began pleading for some other form of compensation instead.

Riena, who had come to witness this spectacle, spoke to Viscount and Viscountess Aradis with evident contempt and pity.

〈You have ten minutes.〉

〈Ten minutes…?〉

〈Since you keep clamoring about compensation, I suppose I ought to grant it. For ten minutes, take whatever you wish from this villa—I won’t interfere. Butler, start timing.〉

〈Understood.〉

The Duke’s butler, standing beside Riena, lifted his pocket watch and watched the minute hand.

At that instant, the Viscount and Viscountess darted into the villa like lightning.
