I finally made up my mind and entrusted the baby to Edric. It felt as though, unless I did this, the gap between him and Alec would never close.
Melie walked toward the nursery, chewing her lip nervously, her face tense.
The door was slightly ajar, allowing Melie to peek inside the nursery.

A bottle with a little breast milk left sat on the table… and the baby was asleep on Edric’s shoulder.
Given how peacefully he slept, it was clear he’d burped thoroughly and comfortably.
‘Looks like Dad did a pretty good job.’
Melie sighed in relief and continued watching the father and son.
After a while, Edric laid the baby down in the crib.
Though he used to effortlessly lift three burlap sacks of tea leaves at once, Alec—whose weight barely matched that of a small puppy—seemed far heavier as Edric struggled to place him gently onto the bed.
He then pulled down the baby’s rolled-up shirt and tucked a thin blanket up to his chest. Just like Melie or Oz would do, he tried placing a millet-filled pillow on the baby’s chest—but hesitated, worried it might be too heavy, and only after removing more than half the millet did he carefully set it down, seemingly reassured.
Melie nearly burst out laughing at his awkwardness.
He reached toward the sleeping baby’s cheek but pulled his hand away, afraid of waking him, and simply stared at him for a long while.
In his eyes, the baby was no longer a stranger or an object of observation.
He was his own blood—someone he must care for and love—and another version of himself.
