“He said to tell you he’s leaving first because he’s busy.”

The butler spoke to Melie, who was staring helplessly at the carriage fading into the distance, trailing noise and dust.

For some reason, Melie felt those words sounded like a lie.

She thought Edric would have simply left without even a word.

‘Just a moment. Please wait just a moment.’

At the time she’d earnestly begged him, Edric’s body had already half-turned toward Wilson.

‘It’s just because he’s busy. So…’

She mustn’t feel disappointed. Otherwise, she’d become just another selfish woman thinking only of herself again.

Melie turned around and headed back into the house.

The considerate maids pretended not to notice the basket of sweets Melie had brought back, though their eyes betrayed awkwardness.

Melie gave a faint smile and handed them a thermos full of tea along with the basket.

“If you don’t mind, let’s share it.”

“Thank you, madam. I was just craving something sweet.”

Sera, speaking on behalf of the group, accepted the basket. Everyone gathered around her with cheerful expressions.

Thanks to them, Melie’s mood improved slightly.
