Melie pulled the square canvas she held close to her chest as if to hide it, then hurried up the stairs so Rena couldn’t follow.
Back in her chambers, she leaned against the door, catching her breath. Then she removed the cover from the painting she’d held so tightly.
A blue background with several lines of varying colors and thicknesses drawn along the border, and in the center, a long velvet rectangle—now finally visible.
Melie lifted her eyes.
Beyond the canvas stood a wine-colored velvet armchair—the very place where the incident that changed her life five years ago had occurred….
Melie walked over to the fireplace. Without hesitation, she tossed the painting behind the screen into the flames.
