I should’ve known it would be like this. They always drag me into conversations like this.

“Not yet.”

Melie forced a smile as she spoke. She desperately wanted to move past this topic and tried to bring up something else, but it was useless. They clung to it relentlessly.

“Oh dear, you must be so worried. What did your physician say?”

“Well…”

“What else could they possibly say? It’s just post-miscarriage complications—they told you to wait, didn’t they?”

“But you can’t just keep waiting forever. Wouldn’t it be better to take more proactive steps?”

“Yes. The elders of the Felton family seem quite impatient already—aren’t you being a bit too careless, Duchess?”

That was precisely why Melie dreaded attending these gatherings.

Not long after her marriage, Melie discovered she was pregnant.

Rather than joy, she felt bewildered. She was still so young and had assumed pregnancy always naturally led to childbirth, so she hardly felt any excitement.

She didn’t even suffer from morning sickness and went about her days as usual—until she accidentally slipped on the stairs.

One foot caught on the edge of a step and slid right off, sending Melie tumbling down the staircase. She must have hit her head along the way and lost consciousness. When she awoke, she was lying in bed, surrounded by people whose faces were etched with despair—and thick blood was steadily pooling between her legs.

Now Melie understood.

Pregnancy and childbirth were never guaranteed.
