You And I Live In Different Worlds (Completed Main Story) - Chapter 14
“Oh my, Rosalyn! You’re already here!”
Eda Felton came straight to the drawing room upon returning from her outing.
“Oh—Mother-in-law…”
Rosalyn, who had been gazing listlessly out the window, sprang to her feet upon hearing her future mother-in-law’s voice.
The two warmly embraced each other.
“How have you been? Are both your parents well?”
“Yes, absolutely. Everyone’s in good health. But you, Mother—you’ve grown even more youthful and beautiful since last we met!”
In response to Lady Felton’s greeting, Rosalyn replied warmly.
“Oh dear, what nonsense! What would you do if I actually started believing you?”
“It’s true! Even in broad daylight, not a single freckle on your face. Whereas I…”
Rosalyn blushed, covering the faint freckles on her own cheeks. Then, as if suddenly remembering something, she asked,
“How on earth does Miss Melie have such porcelain-like skin? I’d love to know her secret.”
“Melie, you mean?”
Taken aback by this unexpected subject, Eda looked momentarily bewildered, but soon nodded in agreement.
“Her skin is certainly quite lovely, that’s true.”
“…”
“But that’s the only thing going for her. She’s far too small and thin—like she stopped growing at fourteen or fifteen! There’s simply no comparison to you, Rosalyn—so elegant and womanly. Even though Melie is like a daughter to me, I must admit what’s plainly obvious.”
“Still, I envy Miss Melie’s delicate features. People sometimes tell me my eyes are so large that I look intimidating.”
“I much prefer your open, refreshing face to Melie’s cramped-looking one. Let’s stop someone passing by and ask—between Melie and you, who’s the greater beauty? I’d wager my entire fortune on Rosalyn.”
Flushed with pleasure at such blatant flattery, Rosalyn smiled but didn’t deny Eda’s words.
For a while, the two enjoyed a cheerful conversation, with Melie as their shared subject.
Rosalyn was surprised by how harshly Lady Felton judged Melie, but she brushed it off—after all, some noblewomen openly disparaged their own daughters in front of others.
Suddenly, Lady Felton realized someone crucial was missing and asked,
“Where’s Edric? Leaving his fiancée alone like this?”
“Oh, he went to fetch my brother—Prince Francis Adel.”
Rosalyn spoke as if just recalling it herself.
“He stepped out briefly for a smoke but hasn’t returned at all—must’ve gotten lost. Seeing both of them delayed like this is worrying. Surely Duke Felton wouldn’t have gotten lost in his own home…”
At that moment, the drawing room door suddenly opened.
“Mother, you’re back.”
Edric walked in, smoothing his sleeves.
“How could you leave your fiancée alone for so long like this?”
“I apologize. Did you wait long, Rosalyn?”
“No, not really… But…”
Rosalyn’s eyes swept past Edric’s shoulder.
“Where’s Fran? Didn’t you find him yet?”
“Oh, I found him. But he said he’d forgotten an urgent matter and asked me to tell you he’s heading home first.”
Edric spoke with perfect composure and impeccable posture.
“He has business?”
Rosalyn tilted her head in confusion.
“There shouldn’t be anything urgent like that.”
“I think he deliberately excused himself.”
Edric explained.
“He wanted to give me the chance to escort you home myself—he even took his carriage with him.”
“Oh my, what a clever young man!”
Eda Felton exclaimed in admiration.
“I think so too, Mother. He’s remarkably quick-witted… and intelligent.”
Edric agreed, though the corner of his mouth twitched slightly—unnoticed by anyone.
Rosalyn still looked doubtful, but just then the butler arrived to announce that dinner was ready, so she let her suspicions drop.
“May I take your hand, Rosalyn?”
Edric offered his arm as an escort. Rosalyn gave a soft smile and placed her small hand into his large, refined one.

The two walked side by side, following the Dowager Duchess out.
With no one watching, Edric no longer needed to manage his expression—his eyes hardened with coldness.
[This is the timeline separator]Melie was afraid to dwell too long on her thoughts.
Everything felt like a dream that vanished in an instant.
Edric had caught her in an unbearably intimate position with a strange man.
His gaze, flickering between her and the man beneath her, seemed strangely hollow.
She couldn’t discern what emotion lay behind those eyes—perhaps disbelief at what he’d witnessed.
Melie stood up. Far too easily, as though her earlier struggles to rise had been a lie all along.
As if she’d been straddling that man entirely of her own will.
Edric’s empty eyes suddenly gleamed with something sharp.
“There… Edric, I mean, this isn’t… it’s not what it looks like…”
Her thoughts hadn’t even settled, yet she blurted out words that tangled uselessly in her mouth.
Frustrated by her incoherence, the man behind her interrupted—the very madman who’d caused this entire mess.
“Let me explain. We were—”
But even he couldn’t finish his sentence.
Edric’s fist sent him crashing to the floor.
Melie instinctively covered her mouth with both hands at the sudden violence.
That refined gentleman, Edric, had actually struck someone.
And it didn’t end there. He stepped forward again, ready to punish Francis once more.
There was no time to wonder what had provoked such fury.
“Stop it!”
Melie spread her arms wide, blocking the path between him and Francis.
For a moment, Edric stared at her as if he’d devour her whole.
His eyes—once compared to the deep sea—now burned like the hottest blue flame.
“Move aside.”
His low voice carried suppressed rage.
He looked dangerously tense, like an overinflated balloon about to burst. And that’s exactly why she couldn’t move.
“It’s my fault.”
“…”
“I invited Prince Adel in. We happened to meet in the hallway… I brought him to my room just to talk for a bit.”
Melie hated herself.
If not for Francis’s leverage over her, she never would’ve defended him.
Because of that shameless man, she’d made herself look reckless.
And worse—right in front of the man she loved most.
She couldn’t bear to look into Edric’s eyes and kept her gaze lowered.
His beautiful, delicate fingertips trembled slightly.
Unspent rage still coursed through his veins.
Whose anger burned hotter—toward that shameless Francis? Or toward her?
Before she could guess, Edric firmly pressed down on one of her outstretched arms. Her arm fell limply, like a weak latch.
Edric walked past her.
The cold draft from his passing made Melie shiver.
Yet, surprisingly, what she heard from behind was a calm apology.
“I misunderstood. I thought Melie was being harmed by a stranger.”
When Melie turned, Francis was using Edric’s arm to pull himself up.
“It’s all right. The situation was certainly easy to misinterpret.”
Though his appearance said otherwise.
The split lip and already-swelling cheek spoke volumes about the force of that single blow.
His speech slurred as he pulled out a handkerchief and spat into it.
“Dinner today might be rather difficult.”

He spoke as if he regretted missing the meal due to another engagement, not a torn mouth.
“Would you mind telling Rosalyn I had urgent business and left early?”
“Of course.”
Edric replied calmly in turn.
“And may I borrow a horse? Rosalyn will need the carriage. You hit me, so the least you can do is grant me that.”
“Take the carriage instead. I’ll escort Rosalyn home myself. That’ll make it easier to explain your sudden disappearance.”
Melie’s head spun.
It was the kind of bewildering disorientation one might feel if suddenly thrown from a raging storm into a sky perfectly clear of clouds.
What had she just witnessed? Had it all been a figment of her imagination?
“My apologies for the trouble.”
Francis bowed politely to Melie in farewell. And Edric…
He didn’t spare her even a glance.
Without another look—as if he’d never see her again—he walked past Melie coldly and didn’t return.
That had happened barely half a day ago.
Melie spent hours alone in the silent room.
All she’d heard since then was Oz’s affectionate scolding for leaving her meal untouched and the distant rumble of carriage wheels outside.
It must surely be Edric returning after escorting Rosalyn.
Melie resented herself for stopping Francis from being beaten senseless.
“Buy me a meal later. You’ll thank me for this.”
What exactly was she supposed to thank him for?
For shattering our precious friendship?
For ensuring I’ll forever be remembered in his mind as the reckless woman who dallied with his future wife’s lover?
Melie wondered how she could have possibly believed Edric would feel jealousy over her.
Admittedly, when Edric had knocked Francis down, even she briefly entertained that hope. But…
“I misunderstood. I thought Melie was being harmed by a stranger.”
As always, her expectations had ended in bitter disappointment.
Now that she thought about it, even if Edric had seen a complete stranger—not his sister—suffering such indignity, he probably would’ve reacted the same way, fists flying before thought.
Melie was certain Francis had been utterly mistaken.
He’d hoped to awaken Edric and break off this engagement—but what broke wasn’t the marriage. It was the ten-year friendship between Edric and her.
He’d accepted her as a friend because of her prudence and discernment. Now that he knew she lacked both, that friendship was over!
Suddenly, she remembered her diary.
Just before Francis stood up, she’d seen him swiftly slip it behind a cushion.
She lifted the cushion—and sure enough, there lay a hardcover notebook with a checkered pattern.
“This was the root of all trouble.”
A monstrous record of her raw, unfiltered emotions. She regretted not burning it long ago.
Melie approached the fireplace.
She lit a firestarter with flint, transferred the flame to kindling, and waited until the fire burned steadily.
When the flames crackled to life, she pushed the diary behind the screen.
All she had to do now was loosen her grip—and this monstrosity would vanish from the world forever…
Knock knock.
But just then, a knock sounded at the door.
She pictured Oz, who’d scolded her earlier for skipping her meal—probably bringing snacks now.
Melie quickly pulled the diary back.
She didn’t want Oz to see the half-burned pages.
She shoved the diary carelessly into the nearest drawer and called out,
“Come in.”
Then she walked toward the side table.
Having nearly skipped lunch, she felt a little hungry. This time, she resolved not to refuse food—and turned around.
She’d meant to sit in the chair behind her—but couldn’t.
“…”

Why was it that although the carriage sound had clearly rung out only once, and no returning wheels could be heard…
Edric was there.
