The month that followed was a constant stream of anxiety.

Cordelia, even to my senses, had become extremely sensitive. Although Leonard had given her a definite answer, the lack of noticeable physical changes had left her so overwhelmed with doubt that she wondered if it might all be a phantom pregnancy.

Nearly another month passed before five physicians examined her body once again.

“Congratulations. You are indeed pregnant.”

All five of them said the same thing. Only then did Cordelia finally relax, bursting once more into joyful tears.

Naturally, the Atirai household was thrown into utter commotion over the child—the first to be born into the family in decades. Not only the servants of Atirai Castle but even Leonard himself, belatedly, joined the flurry of activity.

“I’d really like to just go downstairs for meals.”

“Just bear with it a little longer. What if you slip on the stairs?”

“Oh, come on. How many stairs could there possibly be?”

At first, when he’d learned of the pregnancy, Leonard had merely been happy—but now he opposed even Cordelia going down to the dining hall. Only after belatedly learning how common miscarriages were and how dangerous early pregnancy could be did his attitude shift.

“Oh, honestly.”

“At least let me use my fingers. At this rate, my hands and feet will disappear entirely.”

“Now, now. Open wide quickly, Lady Atirai.”

Cordelia would then reluctantly accept the meals her husband personally fed her, swallowing obediently.

Only after morning sickness began did they realize how good those earlier days had been. She vomited everything she ate, prompting Leonard to replace the castle’s head chef seven times.
