Baron came down to Willas for the first time in a while to deliver the interim report on the investigation Leonard had ordered.

The two met and spoke in a quiet park.

“Why did you bring that dog?”

“It wasn’t me who brought him. When I mentioned I was going to see Lady Cordelia, he jumped into the carriage on his own.”

Baron chuckled softly and glanced toward Roti, who was yawning lazily. Roti nonchalantly rested his chin on the ground and dozed off in the sunlight.

“Here is the report you requested.”

The park was quiet at midday, with few people around. Indeed, only nobles could afford to idle in the park at this hour, which made it even more deserted.

Leonard crossed his legs and examined the documents Baron had gathered. They were thicker than expected, taking some time to read, and soon a look of disappointment flickered across his face.

“What is this?”

“The Vasquez household changes servants so frequently that only the butler remembers the late Lady Vasquez.”

“How many people has he replaced? Does he have some kind of obsessive-compulsive disorder?”

Over the past twenty years, more than a hundred servants had worked at the Vasquez estate, each for an extremely short period. In noble households, it was customary to serve for decades once hired, making this pattern highly unusual.

“It seems less about obsessive tendencies and more about severe wage defaults—most who left didn’t receive their proper pay.”

“Hmph.”

Leonard let out a short sigh and set the documents down on the seat beside him.
