“No matter what terms any other candidate for the earldom proposes, I will be the best choice.”

Andel’s words were correct, and Cordelia readily nodded.

“Alright. After the funeral, I’ll write a letter to the assembly. I’ll tell them just how compassionate you are and how perfectly suited you are for the earldom.”

“It’s truly fortunate that we understand each other so well.”

Seemingly satisfied with the arrangement, Andel and Baron Lancaster smiled and departed.

With the important matters mostly settled, the day finally arrived to move Craig’s coffin to the cemetery.

Rain poured down since early morning—an atmosphere perfectly fitting for a funeral.

“Let us pray for Count Abrams, who was charitable in life and an example to many. Though he has now departed this earth and ascended to the heavens, his gentle kindness shall be remembered forever.”

The priest dispatched from the temple began reciting a long and predictable eulogy. Naturally, none of the gathered mourners paid any attention to his words.

It was plainly obvious that everyone was surreptitiously eyeing one another, speculating who would succeed as the next earl.

Cordelia stared fixedly at Craig’s coffin as it was gradually covered with soil, holding her umbrella.

“Goodbye, Craig. I’m sorry it took so long to bury you.”

Though he hadn’t been a good husband while alive, in death he had become the best husband imaginable, and the resentment she’d held since their early marriage had now completely vanished.

She offered him a brief farewell as she saw him off for the last time. Now the coffin was entirely buried and disappeared from view.

“If anyone wishes to leave a final message for the late earl, please do so now.”
