Leonard was deeply missed. Thinking back, aside from attending Craig’s funeral at Abrams, she had never been apart from him for so long.

“I like you.”

She recalled his calm eyes as he had spoken those words. They held nothing but pure, unwavering certainty, which Cordelia found both astonishing and bewildering.

“Why on earth do you like me?”

Compared to Leonard, she had nothing—no exceptional beauty like Lydia’s, nor was she untouched by past experiences, having been married once before. So how had Leonard fallen in love?

“Love. You call it… love…”

Cordelia murmured the word as if hearing it for the first time.

Of course, she too held her master in special regard. After all, he had pulled her out of that hellish mire and given her the chance to live like a human being—he was more precious and unique to her than anyone else in the world.

The longer they remained apart, the more she missed him, and he was always the first thought in her mind upon waking. Yet, she couldn’t be sure if her feelings truly matched the “love” he spoke of.

If only she could see his face now—perhaps then she’d find some answer.

“I should’ve just ignored whatever letter Father sent.”

If not for that letter—if she’d simply disregarded it as usual—she wouldn’t be stuck in such a pathetic situation now.

Cordelia fiddled guiltily with the ring Leonard had placed on her finger. Despite having survived a kidnapping not long ago, she realized she’d grown careless. She never imagined Anton would bribe her father and lay a trap to disable her magic.

That thought made her suspicious of the first kidnapping as well. It had seemed strangely sloppy—perhaps it was deliberately done to test what she was capable of, or to lull her into lowering her guard.

Chelsea was taking unusually long to return. Growing tired of waiting, Cordelia rose from her seat and wandered near the patio. The sun was strong, but not unbearably so.
