“Hah. Are you threatening me now with your pitiful life? Your life already belongs to me. I could kill you anytime with just a flick of my finger.”

“Then go ahead and kill me now.”

Unlike before, Cordelia moved even closer to Anton. He frowned and instinctively leaned his face away.

“You’re not even worth talking to.”

“I don’t know what you intend to do with me, but as long as I’m alive, I hold the advantage in negotiations. Even if you bring my corpse to my master, you won’t get what you want.”

He clamped his lips shut, confirming to some extent that her guess had hit the mark.

“If you kill them, I’ll find a way to die too. There are countless methods, so spare me your pointless chatter.”

“You’d throw away your life just for a few knights?”

“It’s better to sacrifice myself for knights who protected me than to be used by Archduke Embly. Either way, I’m going to die—what’s the difference if it happens sooner?”

Anton fell into brief contemplation. He wasn’t certain whether Cordelia would truly discard her life like so much straw, but it was clear that her dying prematurely would be troublesome. Moreover, having an additional weakness to constrain her—beyond just poison—was preferable.

“Fine. I’ll let them both live. Now drink.”

Anton extended the vial with feigned benevolence. Her arms were still pinned, leaving her no choice but to simply open her mouth. The liquid that touched her tongue was unbearably bitter and unpleasant. Cordelia swallowed it in one gulp.

“I sincerely hope Embly values honor and promises. Vasquez has already sold everything—even his honor—for the price of wine.”

“You wretched girl!”

Pablo’s furious shout struck her ears, but quickly faded. Soon, her mind was no longer ruled by such trivial noise. A searing pain, as if her innards were being torn apart, seized her entire body. Cordelia clenched her jaw, unable even to scream.
