The moment Amy heard the second prince’s words, which sounded like a shy confession, her face crumpled as if crushed.

“Oh, that’s… a bit much.”

Memories of the past incidents when the Crown Prince had liked her sent a shiver down her spine. If there was one thing she’d gained from her previous life—through that horrifying starvation—it was the realization that she must never become personally entangled with the master she served.

“Huh?”

The second prince doubted his own ears. Amy quickly changed her expression and spoke gently.

“I’ll hold onto it for you until someone even more precious than me appears in Your Highness’s life.”

“Uh… what?”

The second prince blinked blankly, then his eyes widened in astonishment.

“No, Amy, that’s not what I meant…”

“Oh dear, look at the time! Your Highness, please hurry. We must leave the palace soon.”

“Huh? Ah, right. But Amy…”

“I’m in a rush right now—if you have something to say, save it for later.”

Amy shooed the second prince out of the kitchen as if he were a stray dog. He stammered helplessly and was promptly chased out.

Thud. The door closed, and Amy leaned back against it, letting out a silent sigh. Behind her, she heard the second prince hesitate for a moment before his footsteps retreated toward his private chambers.

Amy muttered to herself.

“I can’t possibly go back to that chaotic mess again.”

Her tone sounded like a firm vow to herself. She could feel grateful and sorry toward the second prince, but that didn’t mean she had to take responsibility for his feelings. In fact, this worked out well. Better to cut it off cleanly now—why repeat the tragedy she’d suffered with the Crown Prince?

‘It’s not that the second prince is ungrateful like the Crown Prince was.’

She’d sensed it before, and her recent time with him had only strengthened her certainty: the second prince was someone she could trust. Amy intended to repay the debt she owed him for giving her this second chance at life. Yet, she also felt strongly about carefully shaping this hard-won second life.

‘It’s best to keep personal matters separate from duty.’

She wouldn’t make the same mistake again.

Having settled her thoughts, Amy limped over to the counter, gathered the remaining food onto a plate, and placed it on the table. Then, as if possessed, she shoveled it into her mouth and chewed hastily before swallowing.

The sun had tilted slightly toward the west—time to leave. Amy stood at the palace entrance with the second prince, anxiously scanning the outside. It was past the expected time, and her unease grew with every passing moment.

“Amy? When are we leaving?”

“Oh, just a moment.”

Amy stretched her neck, staring intently toward the main palace. Her heart was filled with dismay. Could it be… that it had failed?

Just then, dust rose in the distance. Several horses were galloping toward them. Amy’s eyes widened as she watched them approach, then quickly straightened the second prince and stood upright herself.

Neigh. Soon, guards clad in elegant silver armor arrived and reined in their horses. They dismounted swiftly onto the dirt ground and strode toward them with firm steps.

Seeing the towering guard, the second prince tensed up nervously.

“Stand straight.”

Amy remained perfectly poised, moving only her lips to whisper. The second prince flinched, then promptly straightened his chest and stood with dignity.

‘Once we reach the Grand Duchy, I’ll have to train him thoroughly.’

Amy fixed the second prince with a determined gaze. Now that she’d made her choice, she absolutely refused to let him be looked down upon by others.

‘Especially since the Crown Prince is already grinding his teeth in frustration.’

When Amy had realized she’d died and returned to this life, she wasted no time. She immediately went to the Empress Consort to resign (who welcomed the news with open arms), and as soon as she was free, she volunteered to become the head maid of the second prince’s household. The palace administration, chronically short-staffed, warmly welcomed such high-caliber personnel.

Everything had happened while the Crown Prince was away on an excursion. Amy couldn’t imagine how furious he’d been upon returning and learning the truth. Surprisingly, it wasn’t even Amy who sent him away when he stormed into the second prince’s palace demanding she return to him.

‘Are you, a person of such exalted status, truly trying to intimidate a mere servant girl?’

The Crown Prince’s face twisted in disbelief before flaring with even greater anger. Of course, he wouldn’t appreciate a sharp rebuke from his younger brother—the very person he’d spent his whole life looking down upon with contempt.

‘Step aside, child.’

‘That’s impossible. Amy now belongs to me.’

For someone who’d spent all this time cowering silently, his words carried a surprising edge. The Crown Prince’s face hardened as he, too, seemed to recognize this shift—not just Amy.

‘How dare you…’

‘My apologies. I only spoke out of concern that word of this might tarnish Your Highness’s reputation and Amy’s good name.’

‘……’

The Crown Prince, blinded by rage and having charged in recklessly, finally paused. Only now did he realize how perfectly this situation could fuel scandal. Amy stepped in to calm the two men, who stood glaring silently at each other.

‘Since this transfer was approved by Her Imperial Majesty the Empress Consort, if you have any complaints, please take them to the Empress’s palace.’

Of course, she knew he couldn’t possibly do that. The Crown Prince’s face instantly paled, and after shooting Amy a resentful glare, he turned sharply, stirring a cold gust of wind behind him. Without looking back even once, he left the second prince’s palace.

‘Yet that same shallow affection could ignore me as I lay dying in prison.’

The Crown Prince’s behavior—acting as if he were the betrayed one—still left Amy speechless, but she quickly composed herself.

‘Now isn’t the time to dwell on such trivial matters.’

Finally, with a metallic clank, the guards halted before them. Amy took a short breath, gracefully gathered her skirts, and curtsied.

“I am Amelia, chief maid of the second prince’s household.”

The guard looked down at her with haughty eyes and replied indifferently.

“I bring an imperial decree from His Majesty the Emperor.”

Amy pressed her lips together tightly and offered a polite smile. Seriously? Not even a proper introduction?

“……”

Seeing Amy only smile without answering, the guard frowned. After a brief pause—as if giving her time—Amy finally spoke.

“His Highness the second prince is here.”

“……I’m aware.”

The guards’ eyes flicked to the boy standing beside Amy, then back to her. A vein throbbed on Amy’s forehead.

‘If you knew, why act like this?’

Hiding her irritation, Amy spoke gently.

“The descendant of the Empire’s sun awaits your greeting, Captain Martin of the Royal Guard.”

Her sharp, almost murderous glare seemed to say, “Do I really have to spell it out for you?”—and finally, the captain’s expression changed as if he’d just realized his mistake.

“Ah, no, I mean… Your Highness, the second prince.”

His reaction suggested he’d never even considered offering a proper greeting, which twisted Amy’s insides. To make matters worse, the second prince looked even more flustered than the captain, worsening her mood further.

“Amy.”

The second prince tugged gently at Amy’s sleeve with an awkward expression. Amy coolly glanced at his hand, then wordlessly asked with her eyes, “What is it?”

“I’m fine, really…”

He glanced at the burly captain and guards, then mumbled in a barely audible voice. Amy huffed out an angry breath that flipped her bangs, then spoke again with a sweet smile.

“Of course, Your Highness. You are far too generous.”

“……”

The second prince wisely stayed silent. He’d quickly realized that while Amy appeared kind, her kindness wasn’t genuine at all. Amy gave a bright smile.

“But a servant cannot afford such generosity. That is palace etiquette—and the proper respect owed to the imperial family. Isn’t that right, Captain Martin of the Royal Guard?”

She turned to him with a look that clearly said, “Go ahead, point out even one flaw in what I just said.” The captain fell utterly silent—because there truly wasn’t a single thing wrong with her statement.

“……My greetings, Your Highness, the second prince. I am Captain Martin, commander of the Royal Guard responsible for palace security.”

In the end, he bowed his head to the second prince.

“Ah, um… yes. Pleased to meet you.”

The second prince accepted the greeting with forced dignity, glancing at Amy for reassurance. Though still dissatisfied, Amy decided this was good enough and moved to the main point.

“Please hand the imperial decree to His Highness.”

“Yes.”

The captain, clearly eager to leave, quickly passed the rolled-up scroll to Amy. She took it with both hands and respectfully offered it to the second prince. He swallowed hard, then slowly unrolled the document.

“…Amy, is this correct?”

After skimming the contents, the second prince leaned slightly toward Amy and whispered. Amy demurely stood beside the prince and quickly scanned the decree with her eyes.

‘Let’s see… First, the land—yes, it includes all three northern territories combined… recognized as an independent duchy, not a subordinate territory… Good! And it requires an annual tribute equivalent to thirty pouches of gold coins to the Empire. That’s perfectly manageable.’

Internally cheering, Amy bowed with a perfectly neutral expression, then gave an elegant nod.

“Please offer your thanks to His Imperial Majesty, Your Highness.”

“Right.”

The second prince faced the direction of the main palace where the Emperor resided, placed a hand over his heart, bowed deeply, and declared clearly:

“I offer infinite gratitude for the grace of the Empire’s sun. May the Empire’s glory forever accompany His Imperial Majesty.”

“……”

Even the captain and guards, who’d been dismissive of the second prince the whole time, now wore strangely altered expressions at this surprisingly proper display of etiquette. Ignoring them entirely, Amy dismissed the visitors.

“Now, His Highness must depart for the Grand Duchy immediately…”

“Ah, yes, of course.”

The captain, sensing something odd, kept glancing back as he rode away. Amy waited patiently until they were completely out of sight. Only when their figures had vanished did she finally exhale and walk toward the carriage.

“Aren’t we leaving now?”

As Amy double-checked whether all the luggage was loaded onto the carriage, the second prince tilted his head and asked. Hadn’t receiving the Emperor’s decree meant all palace business was finished?

She gave an ambiguous “Hmm…” as if hesitating to answer—when finally, the sound Amy had been waiting for reached her ears.
